Adaptive nature of rice to flooded soil

HELLO HIVE

Since I was young and had been following my family to our rice farm there has always been something that always baffled me and that was how weeds found a way survive while they are submerged under water but finally after some years of continual observation and studying different books I latter found out that for every plant that grows and is able to stay strong till maturity that plant must have developed some kind of coping mechanism which makes it present environment favorable to it.

There are so many varieties of rice but many where grouped into one based on their adaptive nature of been able to germinate and establish in flooded soil.

The tolerance of flooding in these varieties was mostly attributed to traits associated with better ability to mobilize stored carbohydrates and to also carry out anaerobic metabolism.

Another adaptive traits is the ability to germinate and elongate faster.

you might thinking that how on earth do these weeds also find away to survive well every weed that is able to grow in this kind of condition must also possess a similar adaptive mechanism to rice.

For example a common weed in my rice farm popularly known as weedy rice because of its ability to look like rice in its early stage has the same adaptive mechanism like rice and therefore ends up infesting on cultivated rice as it cause stagnant growth in rice during early stage and seed shattering and dormancy in the reproductive stage of cultivated rice, it always a strong competitor of rice from the early growth stage up until maturity and this competition most times leads to a severe loss in rice yeild.

Farmers have resulted to using selective herbicide which has a way of killing the weed and leaving a minimal effect on the rice part of which is an increased growth period in some cases where there is an over use of the herbicide.

This herbicide also have an added advantage on the rice because some of these herbicide consist of liquid fertilizers also, the weed after it is dead, decays and also add some for of organic manure to the soil which supports the plant.
