Down by the Salley Gardens | Por los jardines de Salley (Sauces)
"Down by the Salley Gardens" (Gort na Saileán) is a poem first published by Irish author W. B. Yeats in 1889 in "The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems" . In 1909 Herbert Hughes set the music to the Irish traditional The Moorlough Shore (also known as "The Maids of Mourne Shore", "The Foggy dew" and many other names), and though there are other musical settings this is the most famous and as this it is in the Public Domain and I encouraged myself to do this cover as I do love W. B. Yeats as a writer. Another one of my favourite poems by Yeats that I may cover in the future is "The Stolen Child" but that will be another post.
"Por los Jardines de Salley, "Down by the Salley Gardens" (Gort na Saileán en irlandés) es un poema publicado en 1889 por el famoso escritor Irlandés W. B. Yeats in 1889 en su recopilatorio "The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems". Posteriormente en 1909 Herbert Hughes lo adaptó a la música de la canción traditional ya existente "The Moorlough Shore" (también conocida como "The Maids of Mourne Shore", "The Foggy dew" entre otros nombres), y aunque existen otras adaptaciones musicales para este poema, ésta que es la más temprana es la que se ha hecho más famosa y está ya en dominio público para ser versionada. Siendo uno de mis poemas favoritos de este escritor, Nobel de Literatura, que me encanta, me animé a grabar esta versión de esta popular canción tradicional.

A tragic love story: Analysis of its meaning | Una trágica historia de amor: Análisis de su significado
The song is a ballad, a lament about a young boy that meets a delicate, pure and beautiful girl and fall in love, but though she tells him to take love and life easy, he still rush into things and refuses to do so, not agreeing with her, so he finally loses her beloved and now, time later, in sorrow he realizes she had been right along and that he probably took decisions she did not approve, thus losing her. The song ends with regret for his impatience and ambitions and remembrance of their time together "by the Salley Gardens" a long time ago. It's a moment of realization that comes too late.
Esta canción es una balada, un lamento acerca de un hombre joven que conoce a una chica delicada, pura y bella y se enamora, pero aunque ella le dice que se tome el amor y la vida con calma, él no está de acuerdo con ella, apurándola y perdiendo a su amada, así que al final del poema nos lo encontramos mucho tiempo después recordando arrepentido y lleno de pena lo terco y tonto que fué, percatándose de que ella tenía razón y que probablemente tomó decisiones que ella no aprobaba, perdiéndola para siempre. Nos lo encontramos apenado y arrepentido de su impaciencia y ambicion recordando ese tiempo juntos "por los jardines de Sally" mucho tiempo antes. Es un momento en el que se da cuenta demasiado tarde de las consecuencias.

Having said this, take LOVE and LIFE easy, if you rush too much you may lose it all, and then realize when it's too late just like our unfortunately lover. Take your time to see the leaf growing on the tree and the grass on the fields. Everything flows as its own pace. Don't rush it.
Habiendo dicho lo anterior, tomate el amor y la vida con calma o puede que lo pierdas todo y te des cuenta demasiado tarde como el desafortunado amante de esta canción. Toma tu tiempo para ver la hoja crecer en el arbol y la hierba en los prados. Todo tiene su ritmo. No lo presiones ni apresures.

Este es sin duda un precioso poema escrito por uno de los más prominentes escritores de Irlanda que obtuvo el premio Novel de Literatura en 1923. El poema está escrito como simple balada en dos versos construidos de forma similar

Origins of the poem | Orígenes del poema
It's one of Yeat's earlier poems (written in his mid twenties) but also one of the most celebrated. At the beginning it was entitled "‘An Old Son Re-Sung" as one of the verses is similar and in part a reconstruct to a previous older song "The Rambling boys of pleasure" he heard from an old peasant woman and in the village of Ballisodare (near Sligo) fact he acknowledge this on its reprint in 1895 where it was provided its current title "Down by the Salley Gardens". It's been noticed the world Salley (sometimes written as Sally comes from "Saileach" (Irish for Willow Tree) and willows and sallow trees (Goat Willow) (genus Salix) were cultivated to provide material for thatching the roofs back then.
Este es uno de los poemas más tempranos de Yeats (escrito cuando estaba en su veintena) pero también uno de los más conocidos y celebrados. Al principio se titulaba "Una vieja canción recantada" (An Old Son Re-Sung) ya que uno de los versos era muy similar y en parte una reconstrucción de una canción "The Rambling Boys of Pleasure" que le había oído a una campesina del pueblo de Ballisodare (cerca del río Sligo), hecho que él mismo reconoce. Es en su republicación en 1895 cuando el poema adquiere su título definitivo "Down by the Salley Gardens". Se ha dicho que la palabra "Salley" (a veces escrito como Sally) viene del irlandés Saileach (irlandés para sauce) ya que tanto los sauces como los sauces cabrunos (ambos pertenecientes al género Salix y creciendo a la vereda de los ríos) se cultivaban con el objetivo de obtener materiales para hacer techos de paja en los tejados por allá entonces.
