What is MERMAY? ¿Qué es MERMAY?

For a couple of years now, May has been renamed as "Mer-may", a trend that originally started by illustrator/animator Tom Bancroft on instagram back in 2016 when he challenged artists to share mermaid inspired works during May (very much like Inktober). The trend soon spread to all social networks, so it's not uncommon nowadays to see losts of artists share art based on these mythical creatures during this month, and before it ends I want to share my input.

Durante varios años, Mayo ha sido renombrado como "Mer-MAY" (que suena como Mermaid (sirena)) y por tanto una iniciativa surgida de instagram como un desafío del animador/ilustrador Tom Bancroft en 2016, que animó a los artistas a usar el hashtag #mermay y compartir si podían arte inspirado en sirenas durante todos los días de Mayo (de forma similar al inktober) que se extendió a todas las redes, por lo que no es raro ver que artistas compartan sus trabajos inspirados en estas mitológicas criaturas durante cada día de este mes, y antes de que termine Mayo quería aportar mi contribución.

In this article there is a compilation of some of my mermaid photography through the years (past and recent). I still dream of building or purchasing a real fin and film underwater but until then I can play pretend using some fabrics. Also I confess I'm a poor diver.

En este artículo recopilo algunas de mis fotografías inspiradas en sirenas (pasadas y recientes). Aún sueño con comprarme una cola de verad para poder grabar bajo el agua, pero mientras puedo imitar una cola usando telas. Lo cierto es que además, lo confieso, soy mala buceadora.

So this was one of my most recent, and now one of my oldest, the one below was made with watercolours back in 2005. I see I already had my current style back then.

Mythology about mermaids | Mitos sobre las sirenas

Mermaids have been described as half woman/fish since old Babylonian times.

Las sirenas han sido descritas como mitad mujer y pez desde los antiguos tiempos babilónicos.
"Mer" comes from the words sea. All sea-faring cultures have mermaid tales
El prefijo "mer" viene de la palabra "mar". Todas las culturas vinculadas al océano comparten historias de sirenas.

Atargatis, is a Syrian Goddess and one of the earliest myths about mermaids (1000 b.c) after killing her lover by accident, threw herself into the waters and turned into a fish, later into a mermaid deity. The gods would not allow her conceal her beauty in the shape of a fish so she would still look like a woman waist up.

Uno de los mitos más antiguos (1000 AC) es el de la diosa siria Atargatis, que habiendo matado a su amante por accidente, se lanzó a las aguas y se convirtió en pez. Los dioses no permitieron que ocultara su belleza sobrehumana del todo así que se veía como mujer de cintura para arriba.

Greek Sirens, famed also for bewitching Ulysses and his crew, though were part bird. Still both "mermaids" and "sirens" share traits, like being alluring and chanting.

Las sirenas griegas, afamadas por encantar a Ulises y su tripulación con su canto, era en parte pájaro. Pero esta característica la comparten también con las sirenas tradicionales.

Venus (Goddess of Love) was born from Sea Foam

Amphitrite was one of the Nereids, wife of Poseidon as Goddess of the Sea.

Amphritite fue una de las Nereidas, esposa de Poseidón y diosa del mar.

Nereids (50 daughers of Nereus) used to have golden hair and lived in a silvery cave. Often benevolent this this case they helped sailors "NOT" to wreck.

Las Nereidas (las 50 hijas de Nereus) son espíritus del mar, con cabello dorado viven en una cueva de plata. De naturaleza más benevolente, protectoras y ayudan a los marineros a NO naufragar.
En European folklore though long-lived mer-people have no human soul. They're related also to other water spirits that dwell fresh waters, lake and ponds like nymphs and Ondines.

En el folklore europe, aunque tienen larga vida, las sirenas no son inmortales y no tienen alma humana. Están relacionadas además con otros espíritus que habitan aguas dulces como las ninfas u ondinas.

Above: me as a fresh-water sprite. In Spain they're called "Anjanas" or "Ayalgas" often wear in blue and protect the forests. Often considered benevolent unless you disturb the forest or its creatures.

Arriba yo como un espíritu de agua dulce. En España se conoce como "Anjanas" o "Ayalgas" suelen vestir de azul y son protectoras de los bosques. Normalmente benevolentes a menos que perturbes el bosque y sus criaturas.

In art they were often depicted as combing their long hair with a sea shell or with a mirror. If you take a mermaid's mirror or comb you can bind her to your will. Something similar happens with the tale of the Seal women or Selkies with their coat.

En las representaciones de arte suelen ser representadas peinando su largo cabello con una concha y mirándose a un espejo. Si les robas el peine o el espejo, se dice que puedes vincular a la sirena a tu voluntad. Algo similar vemos en los cuentos de las "mujeres foca" o "Selkies" si les quitas su "piel")

For many generations seals have been mistaken for sirens (same as Beluga whales their silhuette can resemble those of a human shape) and thus "Selkies" could shed their seal skin and become a women. There are several fairytales in which a fisherman takes the skin forcing the selkie to become his wife. Yet in most of those tales she manages to return to the sea returning only to visit her children.

Por muchas generaciones se han confudido las focas (y también las belugas) con sirenas ya que su silueta en las aguas puede ser sorprendentemente similar a la humana. De ahí que haya diversos cuentos como el de las "Selkies" (Irlanda) que se convierte en mujer al quitarse su piel de foca. Hay historias en las que se la obliga a convertir en esposa quitándole su piel. Pero en la mayor parte de estos cuentos se las arregla para recuperarla y volver al mar abandonando incluso a sus hijos a los que solo vuelve a visitar.

The little Mermaid, the very famous tale written about Danish writer H. C. Andersen has a bittersweet ending, the mermaid also becomes sea foam. Lacking an immortal human soul, mermaids were to die becoming foam, though thanks to her good deeds, the little mermaid becomes a spirit of air where he can look over humans and continue her journey to get a human soul.

El famoso cuento de "La sirenita" escrito por el danés H. C. Andersen tiene un final agridulce, la sirena se convierte en espuma de mar. Al no tener un alma mortal las sirenas mueren transformándose en espuma, aunque gracias a sus buenas acciones, la sirenita se transforma en un espíritu de aire, donde puede salvaguardar por los humanos y seguir en su intento para conseguir un alma inmortal.

The Rusalki are water nymphs of Slavic mythology initially regarded as benevolent deities but since the XIX often being considered more sinister and likely the ghosts of maidens who died by drawning or violently

Las rusalki son deidades de agua de la mitología eslava y aunque inicialmente se relacionaron con deidadades benevolentes de la fertilidad, luego, a partir del siglo XIX se relacionaron más siniestramente con los fantasmas de doncellas ahogadas o muertas de forma violenta.

They are usually very beautiful though have sorrowful fathomless eyes and often try to lure young men to the murky waters below. I wrote a song called "The Call of the Nymph" inspired by this.

Normalmente se describen como bellas pero con ojos llenos de una tristeza insondable, y a menudo atraen a jovenes para que les hagan compañías en las estancadas aguas de sus pozas. Mi canción "la llamada de la ninfa" se inspira en esta leyenda.

Mermaids and sirens are told to have a haunting, seductive or deceptive voice luring poor sailors to their doom. We see this "mermaid song" pattern repeating in many legends.

Las sirenas suelen tener un canto hechizante, seductor para engañar y atraer a los manrineros a su perdición. Vemos este patrón de "el canto de sirena" en muchas leyendas.

Lorelei is a large rock on the bank of the Rhine River. The rock produces an echo and is associated with the legend of a beautiful maiden who threw herself into the Rhine in despair over a faithless lover and was transformed into a siren who lured fishermen to drawn.

"Lorerei" es un saliente rocoso sobre el río Rin. La roca produce una especie de eco que se asocia a la leyenda de una doncella que se arrojó desde el escarpado hacia el río debido desesperada por la infidelidad de su amido y se transformó en una sirena u ondina que ahora canta a los pescadores para que se ahoguen.

Normally mermaids are human waist up, but in Japan we find the eerie human-faced fish Yaobikun

Normalmente todas estas criaturas son humanas de cintura para arriba pero en Japón encontramos la espeluznante entidad Yaobikum con cara de pez

And to finish this article I wanted to re-share (I did last Summer when it released) my siren song "Surrender" which represents my longing for the sea (I grew up in an oceanic island).

Y para acabar del artículo quería compartir de nuevo (como ya hice el pasado verano cuando la compuse) mi canción de sirena "Surrender" que representa mi anhelo por el mar (yo crecí en una isla oceánica)

Beware, Mermaids have alluring voices, haunting and dangerous, hearing their song might be a sign for impending shipwreck

Cuidado, las sirenas suelen tener voces atrayentes, hechizantes y peligrosas. Escuchar su canción puede ser señal de un naufragio inminente.
