I want to show you today an unusual fountain that has been preserved in the square near the Kazan Cathedral. We are so used to modern conveniences that we have begun to forget that a hundred or two hundred years ago fountains in cities were made not only for beauty, they also had a practical purpose. Every owner of a motor vehicle knows that his iron friend must be periodically fed with gasoline or other fuel. Every owner of carts remembered that his horse needs water. That is why cities had special drinkers for horses. These drinkers disappeared from the streets of cities when automobiles replaced horse traction. The drinking fountain in the square near the Kazan Cathedral is one of the few preserved elements of this kind of urban environment.

The fountain is located opposite the western facade of the cathedral. Spring is late this year, the leaves on the trees are just beginning to blossom.
