¡Hola, amigos! En esta ocasión quiero contarles acerca de mi experiencia aprendiendo el idioma portugués sin haber asistido a una academia, y sin haber hecho siquiera un curso en línea, tan solo viendo una telenovela brasileña. Acompáñame en este post y descubrirás como lo hice.
En primer lugar debo aclarar que no soy buena para hablar el idioma y mucho menos para escribirlo, pero ahora soy capaz de entenderlo en un 95%, algo que antes me resultaba absolutamente imposible.
Siempre me ha gustado Brasil y sus telenovelas, pero éstas llegan a mi país con doblaje en español (con voces muy lindas por cierto) pero lamentablemente no podemos escuchar las voces originales de los actores e incluso, en la mayoría de los casos tampoco escuchamos la banda sonora original porque también es cambiada.
Recuerdo que cuando tenía unos siete años, específicamente en 1992, comenzaron a transmitir en mi país (Venezuela) una estupenda telenovela llamada «Vampi», la cual era innovadora para la época porque trataba temas de ocultismo como los vampiros. Nunca antes otra telenovela (al menos que yo sepa) había tratado un tema así en su trama. A mí me gustaba mucho y sobretodo, lo que más me llamaba la atención eran sus efectos especiales de transformación de los personajes, algo que para ese entonces era asombroso y se veía muy realista, aunque ahora ya no se ven tan increíbles, desde luego.
La telenovela fue producida por la empresa Rede Globo y fue protagonizada por Cláudia Ohana, interpretando a la vampireza Natasha.
Me encantaba la canción de apertura de la telenovela «De los pies a la cabeza» de la banda mexicana Maná.
Luego fueron pasando los años y lamentablemente, mucha gente en mi país olvidó la telenovela a pesar de lo exitosa que fue, lo sé porque siempre que le hablaba a alguien de ella, me decían que no tenía idea de lo que le estaba hablando, pero yo jamás me olvidé de ella, ni de de lo mucho que me gustaba.
Sin embargo, hace como dos años me decidí a buscar la telenovela por internet, a ver si podía volver a verla, y para mi agradable sorpresa la encontré rápidamente en youtube, lo único malo era que estaba en portugués, sin subtítulos. ¡Ahhhhhhh! ¡Qué frustración! Me gustaba poder oír las voces originales de los actores, e incluso me di cuenta de que el nombre de esta producción no era «Vampi», sino «Vamp» y que el tema de apertura no era la canción de Maná, sino Noite Pretta, de Vange leonel, pero solo podía entender unas cuantas palabras de lo que decían los personajes, esas palabras que eran más parecidas mi idioma (español)
Esa situación me frustraba en extremo y hacía que desistiera de mis ganas de volver a ver la telenovela. No obstante, un día decidí abrir mi mente y ver los primeros capítulos, aún y cuando entendía muy, pero muy poco de lo que escuchaba, y poco a poco comencé a sentirme envuelta por la sensación que me provocaba escuchar las viejas canciones de la banda sonora, me sentí como dentro de una maquina del tiempo que me trasladó a una época feliz, cuando yo era niña, y mi abuelita vivía todavía, cuando yo iba a su casa y me ponía a ver la telenovela.
Conforme seguí avanzando en la historia, ya podía entender la mayoría de lo que decían los personajes. Lo que hice fue prestar atención a lo que decían los actores y a las acciones que ellos realizaban para asociar las palabras con las acciones, además, también presté atención a las palabras que se repetían mucho para buscarlas en algún diccionario online. Desde luego que la pronunciación es diferente a la palabra escrita, pero la interfaz siempre tiende a corregirlas, y de esta manera yo lograba saber el significado.
Luego, comencé a buscar las canciones que me gustaban de la telenovela junto con la letra y comencé a practicar cantándolas (para trabajar la pronunciación), buscando su significado (para aprender vocabulario nuevo) y finalmente aprendiéndolas de memoria.
Para la mitad de la telenovela ya yo podía enterarme perfectamente de todo lo que decían los actores, lo que sucedía en torno a la trama, es decir, logré un nivel de comprensión del idioma bastante alto, pero no me quedé ahí, sino que contacté con una amiga brasileña que tengo, Leila Da Silva. Ella es de Minas Gerais, pero tiene muchísimos años viviendo en Venezuela e incluso habla el español con regionalismos. Le conté que podía entender su idioma pero no hablarlo, al menos no muy bien como me habría gustado, entonces ella comenzó a ayudarme, mejorando mi pronunciación cuando hablábamos por teléfono, algo que sigo haciendo hoy en día.
Como ven, amigos, lo importante es no rendirse y tampoco subestimar sus propias capacidades. La mayoría de las personas se bloquea a la hora de enfrentarse a algo nuevo y prefieren inventar excusas absurdas e injustas consigo mismas como «No sirvo para eso» o «Soy muy bruto». Tú no tienes derecho a afirmar algo como eso, todos tenemos las mismas capacidades de aprendizaje, solo que lo hacemos de formas diferentes. Hay quienes aprenden observando, otros escuchando y otros imitando, pero todos podemos hacerlo, nunca te rindas y no te limites.
Cuando yo aprendí a hablar inglés, estuve en una academia por 2 años y me resultó fácil, ya que yo tenía todo el material necesario para el aprendizaje como libros, Cds y principalmente profesores, algo que nunca tuve a la hora de aprender portugués, pero en este caso lo compensaba el hecho de que es un idioma muy parecido al español. De todos modos pude hacerlo a partir del momento en que decidí darme la oportunidad y no rendirme.
Si quieres aprender un nuevo idioma, te recomiendo ver series y películas en el idioma original, aunque con subtítulos para que puedas ir comprobando lo que los personajes dicen, también puedes buscar canciones y practicar cantándolas, traducelas y memorizalas para aprender vocabulario nuevo.

I have always liked Brazil and its soaup opera, but these come to my country with Spanish dubbing (with very nice voices by the way) but unfortunately we cannot hear the original voices of the actors and even, in most cases we don't hear the original soundtrack because it's also changed.
I remember when I was about seven years old, specifically in 1992, they began to broadcast in my country (Venezuela) a great soap opera called "Vampi", which was innovative for the time because it dealt with occult themes such as vampires. Never before had another soup opera (at least as far as I know) dealt with such a theme in its plot. I liked it a lot and above all, what attracted my attention the most were its special effects of transformation of the characters, something that for that time was amazing and looked very realistic, although nowadays they don't look so incredible, of course.

However, about two years ago I decided to look for this soup opera on the internet, to see if I could watch it again, and to my pleasant surprise I quickly found it on youtube, the only bad thing was that it was in Portuguese, without subtitles. Ahhhhhhhhhh! What a frustration! I liked being able to hear the original voices of the actors, and I even realized that the name of this production was not "Vampi", but "Vamp" and that the opening theme was not the song by Maná, but Noite Pretta, by Vange leonel, but I could only understand a few words of what the characters were saying, those words that were more similar to my language (Spanish).
This situation frustrated me to the extreme and made me give up my desire to watch the soup opera again. However, one day I decided to open my mind and watch the first chapters, even though I understood very, very little of what I was hearing, and step by step I began to feel enveloped by the sensation that listening to the old songs of the soundtrack caused me, I felt like inside a time machine that took me to a happy time, when I was a child, and my grandmother was still alive, when I went to her house and I started to watch the soap opera.
As I progressed through the story, I could understand most of what the characters were saying. What I did was to pay attention to what the actors were saying and the actions they were performing to associate the words with these actions, and I also paid attention to the words that were repeated a lot to look them up in an online dictionary. Of course the pronunciation is different from the written word, but the interface always tends to correct them, and in this way I managed to know the meaning.
Then, I started looking up the songs I liked from the soap opera along with the lyrics and started practicing singing them (to work on pronunciation), looking up their meaning (to learn new vocabulary) and finally learning them by heart.
By the middle of the soup opera I could already understand perfectly everything the actors were saying, what was happening around the plot, that is, I achieved a high level of understanding of the language, but I didn't stop there, I contacted a Brazilian friend of mine, Leila Da Silva. She is from Minas Gerais, but she has lived in Venezuela for many years and even speaks Spanish with regionalisms. I told her that I could understand her language but not speak it, at least not as well as I would have liked, so she started to help me, improving my pronunciation when we talked on the phone, something I still do today.
As you can see, friends, the important thing is not to give up and not to underestimate your own capabilities. Most people get blocked when facing something new and prefer to invent absurd and unfair excuses with themselves like "I'm not good for that" or "I'm too gross". You have no right to affirm something like that, we all have the same learning capabilities, we just do it in different ways. There are those who learn by observing, others by listening and others by imitating, but we can all do it, never give up and don't limit yourself.
When I learned to speak English, I was in an academy for 2 years and it was easy for me, since I had all the necessary material for learning such as books, CDs and mainly teachers, something I never had when learning Portuguese, but in this case it was compensated by the fact that it's a language very similar to Spanish. Anyway, I was able to do it from the moment I decided to give myself the opportunity and not give up.
If you want to learn a new language, I recommend watching series and movies in the original language, but with subtitles, so you can check what the characters say, you can also look for songs and practice singing them, translate them and memorize them to learn new vocabulary.
