All the evil on the island exploded around the 14th century when the bubonic plague broke out. Because Venice is a port city and wet, the spread of the disease was inevitable, the waters of the lake were infected and there was no escape.

In only 4 days, more than half of the inhabitants of Poveglia and Venice perished due to the disease, the decomposing bodies piled up in the streets, contributing to the insalubriousness. The measure taken to solve the new problem in Venice was to transfer the bodies of their dead to Poveglia, which were cremated in shallow pits.

However, that was not enough and along with the corpses, the sick were also taken to Poveglia and put in quarantine, even healthy people, since if they touched for any reason (a common cold or a dry throat) they were taken as sick and put in quarantine, where they eventually ended up infected with the disease. The dying were burned alive along with the corpses in the pits..

About 160,000 people were sent to Poveglia to die and the cremation days lasted all day, non-stop. Eventually, the island became uninhabited.

In 1922, Poveglia was re-inhabited again, this time by mental patients (harmless patients alongside psychopaths) and leprosy patients. They all lived in a psychiatric hospital to which a church and a bell tower were added, visible from afar.

It wasn't long before the patients reported hearing or seeing shadows screaming in agony all over the island, but because they were mental patients, none of their caregivers paid attention to the stories they told.

Soon after, however, one of the doctors also began to have these visions and to hear people crying and screaming. Thinking he was beginning to go mad and haunted by the visions, he decided to commit suicide by throwing himself from the top of the church steeple.

In addition, the patients (as it was usual, and still happens) were subjected to mistreatment or experiments, many of them even lethal, which contributed to the accumulation of bodies in Poveglia. In fact, it's said that there are about 300,000 remains and that more than 50% of the island is composed of human remains and ashes.

Finally in 1968, the hospital was closed and the island was permanently abandoned, since it's not allowed to enter it without an express permission from the Municipality of Venice. Many rumors are told about the island: shadows are seen at night among the foliage or if you sail near it, you can hear screams and cries for help from people who have long since ceased to exist.
