Un callejón inesperado [ESP] // An alley unexpected [ENG] || GRINCH STORIES

There is nothing like the last days of November and the first days of the last month of the year to do your Christmas shopping. Merchants want to free up inventory to make room for new merchandise, yes, the trendy stuff, the stuff that people with money pay the most for when Christmas day approaches. That's why Jack couldn't afford to ignore the black friday so typical of this time and went out on the street that day, as if life was going to be his. He had the need to vindicate himself.

The current year had been fatal: in January his father died, to whom Jack was very attached because he was the firstborn; in April the COVID-19 pandemic had left him without a job, one that he loved very much and that didn't seem like one, as a dispatcher at an airport counter, he was happy just to see the faces of the people who were going to travel; in June his mother died of grief, used for 52 years to live with his father; the only good news was that he had gotten a job two months ago and was already starting to stabilize the family's economy.

They had not gone hungry because his wife had not suffered the same fate and carried the family off on her back, but, as is often the case, tensions over money were heightened by the confinement, the sharing of household chores and the raising of two children. Sometimes he took out his frustration on them and sometimes on his wife, yet things were beginning to improve as he managed to get some money home.

Hence the need to try to compensate with a good gift their behavior during the crisis period (Guys! as if the material would fix things). That morning was cold and cloudy, he went out to downtown Pittsburgh to check out stores. It would take him all day because he was on a tight but decent budget. At the third store he checked, he got a beautiful doll that had been in her daughter's sights earlier this year and was very well priced. He bought it.

He kept walking and at the eighth store he had entered, he couldn't decide between an old model video game console or an electronic tablet for his son. He asked the clerk if he had children and if it was his decision, which one would he take? The guy replied that the old console was the most sensible choice, because the game disks were still made by the company, a tablet could make his son upset. So Jack took the dealer's advice.

As he paid and left the store, Jack was only missing his wife's gift; it was noon and he was hungry, on his way to a restaurant he looked at a dark alley, where he read a sign that said: "Get out if you can". He thought it was funny that a store would catch the public's attention that way, so once he ate he would go back to the alley, to see what was on offer that was so good, that people could not leave without buying.

He paid for the food, returned to the alley and entered the store. There were stuffed animals everywhere. He went to the back of the store and asked the saleswoman if she had anything interesting for his wife. She told him to go to the main sideboard, where he would get what he wanted. Jack saw a bed, lay down on it and never stood up again.
