OGNATAR, EL SÉPTIMO BUSCADOR III

Los magos observaron a Azazel con desdén, pero estaban curiosos de escuchar lo que el ángel tenía que proponer. Se miraron entre ellos; se expresaron con ademanes, muecas y susurros que el viento otorgaba discretamente al forastero, quien solo estaba parado en su lugar, sonriente y quieto como una estatua resplandeciente. Ognatar intervino en la discusión secreta que había entre los magos, y en susurros les habló con la verdad. —Debemos escucharlo, —dijo el joven mago—si fuera un mal mayor, ya estuviéramos en peligro o nos estuviera atacando en estos momentos mientras tenemos esta conversación, pero no, solo quiere llegar a un acuerdo con nosotros. ¿Y si lo que viene a proponernos no perturbará nuestra tradición sino que mejor aún, nos traerá una vida más libre, la que todos deseamos? Sé que es así porque puedo verlo en los corazones de cada uno de ustedes. ¿Y si podemos expandir nuestros poderes aliviando la corrupción de otros lugares? Podríamos hasta encontrar nuevos conocimientos que extiendan nuestros dones y así el Séptimo Santuario Arcano sería más agraciado. —¡Imprudente! —Le respondió Orbon al joven mago—¿Cómo te atreves a usar tus dotes con nosotros viendo dentro de nuestros corazones? ¡Debería usar mi fuego arcano para fulminarte aquí mismo! —Imprudencia o no, —intervino Onq en ese instante—el joven mago tiene un punto, el cual es mucho más del que podemos soportar, porque díganme, ¿cuántos de nosotros no deseamos una vida sopesada con un poco de placeres? Creo que todos los que estamos presentes. ¿Acaso no anhelan averiguar lo que el mundo fuera de Calansia desea conferirnos? —¡Pero esta vida la aceptamos—decían al mismo tiempo Obregud y Obregad— renunciando asimismo a los goces cotidianos Onq, es por eso que estamos aquí! Así siempre ha sido, es la tradición. —Y Orbon asintió aprobando ese punto. —Sí, pero las tradiciones pueden cambiarse. —Dijo Olfed con voz serena. —¡No puedo creer lo que oigo! —Exclamó Orbon sulfúrico— ¿Estás de acuerdo con cambiar la tradición Olfed? —Y no solo él también yo. —Respondió Ofraired con la voz firme. —Estamos agobiados Orbon de siempre permanecer en la soledad. Cuando no estamos protegiéndola, la naturaleza de Calansia atiende sus propios asuntos privados, los cuales no nos conciernen a menos que haya disputa, pero de no ser así, ella tiene su vida propia y es satisfactoria al observar. Cada uno de nosotros lo sabemos porque la contemplamos a cada rato, y sentimos envidia a pesar de que tenemos prohibido sentir esa clase de sentimientos, pero lo hacemos, porque es demasiado impetuoso como para rechazarlo. »Yo deseo, como todos los demás, una vida diferente y plena, sin abandonar mis obligaciones como mago del Séptimo Santuario Arcano. Los demás están de acuerdo conmigo hasta tú, Orbon, puedo verlo en tus ojos ardientes; esa chispa, ese corpúsculo resplandeciente que te pide una vida diferente, pero eres demasiado orgulloso para aceptarlo y este ángel se ha dado cuenta de eso. Ognatar también lo notó, y quizás por eso lo ha invocado. —Si pero sin nuestro permiso. —Aseveró Orbon y los demás asintieron. —Sí, así es, —continuó Ofraired—y creo que debe de reprenderse por ello, pero no lo hizo con mala intención. Aún es nuevo para nuestras tradiciones, paulatinamente las entenderá. Sin embargo, debemos emprender unas nuevas que enaltezcan el título que nos hemos ganado aparte del de magos, el de «Buscadores». El discurso de Ofraired batió los deseos de los demás magos, ya casi estaban convencidos de la oferta de Azazel, y Ognatar pudo verlo, tan claro como el viento sacude las hojas de los árboles. Tenía esa dote particular, el poder de ver los anhelos y desprecios dentro de los seres vivos, pensaba que solo él podía hacerlo hasta que se topó con Azazel, quien también posee ese don; lo que lo convertía en un enemigo bastante persuasivo. —¿Entonces está decidido? —Preguntaron Obregud y Obregad. —Por lo que veo, sí, haremos el trato con el ángel. —Respondió Onq para todos. —Bueno, pero no pongamos esas caras, mirémoslo más bien como un nuevo comienzo. —Continuó Olfed con tono animoso. —De acuerdo, —expresó Orbon—tendré que ceder ya que todos ustedes quieren proseguir con esto y hacer el trato con el ángel, pero que sea Ognatar quien interceda por nosotros ya que fue él quien lo invocó. Y otra cosa más joven mago, si algo sale mal te hago responsable de todo, y por el fuego sagrado de Calansia que soy yo, te buscaré y te incineraré hasta los huesos. Ognatar asintió trémulo ante la amenaza de Orbon, pero solo un momento. No sentía en realidad ese miedo agudo por el mago, todo lo contrario, lo veía como un viejo hablador que solo quería mantener su mando como hechicero supremo de la orden. Eso hacía que lo mirara con desdén, y de cumplirse su amenaza de venir a buscarlo, lo enfrentaría con todo su poder. Después de tener la aprobación de todos sus hermanos de la orden, Ognatar se dirigió al ángel para decirle que ya habían decidido sobre su propuesta. —Y bien joven mago, ¿que han decidido? —Dijo Azazel sonriente. —Sé que ya lo sabes. —Contestó Ognatar de manera petulante. —No tengo porque repetirlo. —¡Vaya! —Exclamó el ángel sorprendido. —¡Un vidente de emociones igual que yo! Quien iba a saber que encontraría a alguien con mi habilidad especial en otra dimensión. Parece que no somos tan diferentes. En fin, hablaré para todos ya que comenzamos a entendernos. En ese momento, Azazel extendió sus alas y se elevó por los aires solo un poco para quedar en vista de los siete magos. —Queridos amigos, me siento contento de que hayan aceptado mi propuesta. Déjenme advertirles que no se arrepentirán, a menos que sus corazones tomen otra dirección y ya no sientan que esto sea su anhelo, pero sino pasa, se sentirán a gusto con lo que encontrarán, tanto bajo mi voz como mis alas. Y el ángel comenzó a oscilar con regodeos sobre el aire, fijando sus amarillos ojos centellantes sobre el sol y profesando un conjuro en una lengua desconocida para los magos. Después señaló hacia el Este, explicando que el portal hacia las fueras de Calansia los esperaba allí y que él iba acompañarlos. Todos se miraron entre ellos armándose de valor. Activaron sus dotes de buscadores y emplearon su aventura hacia los desconocidos exteriores de su hogar. CONTINUARÁ...

OGNATAR, THE SEVENTH SEEKER III

The magicians looked at Azazel with disdain, but were curious to hear what the angel had to propose. They looked at each other; they expressed themselves with gestures, grimaces and whispers that the wind discreetly gave to the stranger, who was only standing in his place, smiling and quiet as a shining statue. Ognatar intervened in the secret discussion among the magicians, and in whispers spoke to them the truth. -We must listen to him, -said the young magician-If he were a greater evil, whether we were in danger or he was attacking us right now while we were having this conversation, but no, he only wants to come to an agreement with us. What if what he is proposing to us will not disturb our tradition but, better still, will bring us a freer life, the one we all desire? I know this is so because I can see it in the hearts of each of you. What if we can expand our powers by alleviating corruption elsewhere? We may even find new knowledge that will extend our gifts and thus the Seventh Arcane Sanctuary will be more graceful. -Reckless! -Orbon replied to the young magician, -How dare you use your gifts on us by looking into our hearts? I should use my arcane fire to smite you right here! -Reckless or not, -Onq intervened at that moment-the young magician has a point, which is much more than we can bear, because tell me, how many of us do not desire a life weighed down with a little pleasure? I think all of us who are present, don't you long to find out what the world outside of Calansia wants to bestow on us? -But we accept this life -they said at the same time Obregud and Obregad- renouncing also to daily pleasures Onq, that is why we are here! He had this particular gift, the power to see the yearnings and scorns in living beings; he thought that only he could do it until he met Azazel, who also possessed this gift; which made him a quite persuasive enemy. -Then is it decided? -Obregud and Obregad asked. -As far as I can see, yes, we will make the deal with the angel. -Onq answered for everyone. -Well, let's not make those faces, let's look at it as a new beginning. -Olfed continued with a cheerful tone. -All right, -said Orbon, -I will have to give in since you all want to go ahead with this and make the deal with the angel, but let Ognatar be the one to intercede for us since it was he who invoked him. And one more thing, young magician, if anything goes wrong I will hold you responsible for everything, and by the sacred fire of Calansia that is me, I will seek you out and burn you to the bone. Ognatar nodded tremulously at Orbon's threat, but only for a moment. He did not really feel this acute fear for the wizard, on the contrary, he saw him as a talkative old man who only wanted to maintain his command as the supreme wizard of the order. This made him look down on him, and if his threat to come after him came true, he would confront him with all his power. Let me warn you that you will not regret it, unless your hearts take another direction and no longer feel that this is your desire, but if it does not happen, you will feel at ease with what you will find, both under my voice and my wings. And the angel began to sway with delight in the air, fixing his yellow glowing eyes upon the sun and professing a spell in a tongue unknown to the magicians. Then he pointed to the East, explaining that the portal to the outskirts of Calansia was waiting for them there and that he was going to accompany them. They all looked at each other with courage.
