Dogs hit by cars and left for dead

As a Thailand street dog, your chances of getting hit by a car and having the driver just carry on as nothing had happened is an all-too-common occurrence. On one side of the situation you can kind of understand why it happens so often because there are just so many dogs wandering the streets at any given time but at least for me, if I had ever hit an animal with a car in my life I would at least see what I could do to help. Here, strays are just so common that it is just a part of life that they get hit and in most situations, they either adapt with a life-long limp, or they crawl off somewhere to slowly die.

We recently discovered 2 dogs with broken limbs due to what we presume are getting hit by vehicles and they are currently in our care.

When you are in these situations you have to be really careful, because even though we try to gain the trust of the animals before ever approaching them by way of treats and fried chicken, they an react violently to being handled. Dogs are mostly loving creatures but they also don't understand why they are in pain and will snap at you if you aggravate their injuries. Despite the fact that we have handled many cases like this, we always have to be extremely careful to avoid getting bit.

Thankfully, this doggo was happy to see us and despite the injuries the tail was a waggin' when we approached.

You can't tell from the pictures, but the leg is badly broken and according to the monks at this temple, the dog doesn't move very often and when he does it is only a little ways with a bad limp and then lies back down. If you have ever spent any time in a country where injured dogs are left to their own devices to recover, you will notice that some of them just simply have permanent limps their entire lives. Their ability to just "roll with the punches" is pretty remarkable.

Also, I always find it really touching that despite the fact that they are in pain and nobody is helping them, that these loving creatures, for the most part, still have no interest in hurting you.

So we picked this guy up and will put it in our care until it has time to recover. We already have another with a similar injury and unfortunately the other case is a bit more dire than this one.

Off we go to the vet for some x-rays and to see if it is possible for surgery and a cast. Things like this can be very complicated if the break has occurred to far up in the hip so we just have to remain hopeful that this is not the case. If it is, our options for helping are going to be very limited. We'll do what we can even though our kennels are already bursting at the seams with "patients."

With any luck this will just be a simple break that the doc can set and we can keep the dog here for a few days and then put it back in the care of the monks, with some food and treats of course.
