So this year our veggie patch was nil, zero, Non existent. Somehow we never found time during our planting seasons to drop seeds into the ground. No ones fault, just simply happened.

Luckily years ago when we got this place it had an orchard of fruit trees, handily planted for us to make use of.

Sooooo we have had fresh fruit through out the year.

Theres something fantastic about the planning and foresight that went into it. The gentleman who planted the trees used to work here in the early 1900s, and planted most of the fruit trees.

But how do we know this you ask? Because we met his son. A sprightly Gascogne man in his mid 90s. We had him around for drinks a few times over the years and he would often describe picking fruit with his father and tending the trees.

These weird lookin things here are called Medlars. Really popular in the medieval times but out of fashion these days. You have to use a process called bletting to let them ripen further after harvesting. they should be ready for harvesting in november, then we store them in a fridge for a further 3-4 weeks.

They then look rotten, but taste delicious. Especially pureed and added to pumpkin or apples for a great spread.

So many varieties that its hard to take in sometimes. Its currently September so our fruit selection is of course seasonal.

We often swap fruit for Veg with our neighbours and friends so I guess it all works out in the end.

We pretty much harvest daily until the last minute, Then we will bag up any ripe fruit left and store it via Jams,Preserving, freezing etc.

The green figs have come out late this year due to all the rainy days throughout the summer, and the apples and pears are just coming along as well as some late peaches and plenty of nuts.

So while we didn't manage to get any veggies in this year, we have an abundance of fruit.

Were going to be adding a few more trees and bushes to the mix this coming year. as well as getting the veg patch prepped over winter for spring.

Next year we should be completely self sufficient on both fronts with room to share. At least thats the Plan!

So until then, Here's the Fruit, @edprivat has the taters. What yall growin?
