We are currently experiencing the beginning of a new generation of consoles, now we have dizzying SSDs and processing speeds, 40 GB patches, games that exceed 100 GB, and considerably reduced loading times compared to the previous generation, in addition to obviously the improvement graph that occurs by inertia.

Honestly, in my country very few privileged people have access to this generation so soon, the economy and price inflation don't make them exactly accessible, because of this a fairly large percentage of people own a PlayStation 2, a console which I also have, which is much more accessible due to its low cost as well as how easy it is to get games.

Personally, yesterday I was a bit bored and decided to dust off my old PS2 to play some of the video games that marked my early childhood, at the time I really liked games based on animated films, mostly from Disney, such as Bolt, Ratatouille and WALL -E, also Kung Fu Panda and Shrek The Third (these last two are from Dreamworks though).

The moment I start playing, I can't help but feel a stream of nostalgia that causes me a lot of joy, and I spent a long time playing WALL-E, a game that despite being simple, is one of my favorites on the console due to its sentimental value and because obviously it made me a lot of fun, and that's why I thought about dedicating a post to a such wonderful console.

The PS2 is remembered for many things, on the one hand it remains the best-selling console in history, with approximately 159 million units sold, followed closely by the Nintendo DS (154 million), in addition to having an immense catalog of games of all types, since games were developed until 2013, as well as the year in which the console was finally discontinued, this means that the PS2 was actually on sale for two complete generations, competing even against the consoles of later generation.

It wasn't the most powerful console of its time though, but it was the most popular and by far, piracy also had an influence on this, in a similar way to the PS1, in this way it was very cheap for the consumer to get more games and this obviously increased the attractiveness of the console, in addition to being backward compatible with the games of its predecessor, nowadays it's possible to run backups of games via USB, so it's still a very attractive and economical option despite the fact that perhaps the fisical games are more scarce.

And that is another important factor, the games, as I said, the catalog was immense, but it also had quality, enough with names like God of War, Jak, Black, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, among many others that perhaps are not so well known or that I'm not mentioning them, I could say Resident Evil 4, but this game was initially exclusive to Nintendo GameCube, but due to the poor sales of said console Capcom was almost forced to launch it also on PS2 some time later.

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I always receive my consoles relatively late, and this was no exception, since the PS2 was released in 2000, and I had mine exactly on December 28, 2008, a date that I'll probably never forget, at that time the catalog was more than stocked, but due to my age I played mostly things aimed at a child audience, such as the games that I mentioned at the beginning of the post, which without any shame I could play today.

One thing I miss about that generation in general, are the cables, as strange as it sounds, there were always people who accidentally threw their console to the ground, or who tripped over the cable, the positive side was that we didn't have to worry about use any battery and we could play for hours and the controller would work as usual.

Something that I don't miss, but that does make me nostalgic, was the anxiety every time we put a disc when the console had enough time of use, the laser began to fail or the discs were scratched, and therefore we had to try several times until the beloved PlayStation 2 logo finally appeared, similarly to the PS1 as well.

My point with this post is to do a bit of retrospective and show that sometimes it's worth going back to the good of the past, to the original experience, since although you can emulate a game with 4K resolution and better textures, something is lost in that transition, or at least that's my opinion, there is nothing like playing every video game on the platform for which it was intended.

Actualmente vivimos el inicio de una nueva generación de consolas, ahora tenemos SSD y velocidades de procesamiento vertiginosas, parches de 40 GB, juegos que sobrepasan los 100 GB, y tiempos de carga bastante reducidos en comparación a la generación anterior, además de obviamente la mejora gráfica que ocurre por inercia.

Sinceramente en mi país muy pocos privilegiados tienen acceso a esta generación tan pronto, la economía e inflación de los precios no las hace precisamente accesibles, a causa de esto un porcentaje bastante grande de personas posee una PlayStation 2, consola la cual yo también conservo, la cual resulta mucho más accesible por su bajo costo además de lo fácil que resulta conseguir juegos.

Personalmente, ayer me encontraba un poco aburrido y decidí desempolvar mi vieja PS2 para jugar a algunos de los videojuegos que marcaron mi temprana infancia, en su momento me gustaban mucho los juegos basados en películas animadas, mayormente de Disney, como Bolt, Ratatouille y WALL-E, también Kung Fu Panda y Shrek The Third (estos dos ya son de Dreamworks).

Y eso es otro factor importante, los juegos, como ya dije el catálogo era inmenso, pero también tenía calidad, basta con nombres como God of War, Jak, Black, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid 2 y 3, entre muchos otros que quizás no sean tan conocidos o los estoy omitiendo, podría mencionar Resident Evil 4, pero este juego inicialmente era exclusivo de Nintendo GameCube, pero debido a las malas ventas de dicha consola Capcom se vio casi obligada a lanzarlo también en PS2 tiempo después.

Como comenté en uno de mis posts anteriores, yo siempre recibo mis consolas relativamente atrasadas, y esta no fue la excepción, pues la PS2 fue lanzada en el año 2000, y yo tuve la mía exactamente el 28 de diciembre del año 2008, fecha que probablemente nunca olvide, en ese entonces ya el catálogo estaba más que surtido, pero debido a mi edad jugaba más que nada a cosas enfocadas a un público infantil, como los juegos que mencioné al inicio del post, los cuales sin ningún tipo de vergüenza podría jugar a día de hoy.

Una cosa que extraño de esa generación en general, son los cables, por extraño que suene, siempre hubo personas que por un descuido tiraron su consola al suelo, o que se tropezaban con el cable, el lado positivo era que no teníamos que preocuparnos por utilizar ningún tipo de batería y podíamos jugar durante horas y horas y el control funcionaría como siempre.

Algo que no extraño, pero que sí me produce nostalgia, era la ansiedad cada vez que poníamos un disco cuando ya la consola tenía bastante tiempo de uso, el lector empezaba a fallar o los discos se rayaban, y por ende había que intentar varias veces hasta que finalmente apareciera el querido logo de PlayStation 2, de forma similar a como ocurrió también con el PS1.

Mi punto con este post es hacer un poco de retrospectiva y hacer ver que a veces vale la pena volver a lo bueno del pasado, a la experiencia original, ya que aunque puedas emular un juego con resolución en 4K y mejores texturas, se pierde algo en esa transición, o al menos esa es mi opinión, no hay nada como jugar a cada videojuego en la plataforma para la cual fue pensado.
