El juego se centra la mayor parte del tiempo en la conducción, con carreras y batallas desenfrenadas por lo que dicho aspecto está muy bien trabajado, aunque no lo es el caso en el tema de las peleas cuerpo a cuerpo, donde contaremos con un único botón de ataque a nuestros enemigos, pero pese a esto, el juego hace que nos resulte bastante épico todo, incluso las peleas, con estilos de cámara lenta y combinaciones de golpes muy bien trabajados, en donde también podremos tomar armas para acabar con nuestros enemigos, pero, en caso de que consigas una pistola, lo mejor no será disparar a los malos, sino más bien apuntar a los barriles de gasolina para provocar unas explosiones épicas y acabar con varios de un solo golpe, con lo que obtendremos logros que nos permitirán mejorar las habilidades de lucha de Max.
Mad Max, es del estilo de juegos Sandbox, es decir, un juego no lineal, en el que no existe un orden predeterminado y estará en nuestras manos el tipo de misiones y acciones dentro del juego, con el objetivo principal de rescatar el "Interceptor" y dirigirse hacia las Llanuras del silencio, un lugar que Max denomina con ese nombre, en donde cree que podrá estar alejado de la destrucción y por fin encontrar un poco de paz.
Para lograr superar el juego, tendremos que ser bastante ingeniosos, pues tendremos que ir mejorando nuestro vehículo y a nuestro personaje Max a base de chatarra, aunque también la chatarra nos servirá para mejorar las fortalezas que se encuentran a lo largo del mapa en donde será posible llevar nuestro coche para que re-establezca su combustible.
