The Birth of an Industrialist - EVE Online Roleplay Diary #01

My name is Aphiel Nightwood, and I'm a New Eden Capsuleer. Sit down and let's drink a cold Quafe while I tell you my story!

This is a roleplaying post as a character from the game EVE Online, a sci-fi/space MMORPG in which several thousands players play on a single-shard server and can choose their own in-game path, including PvP, PvE, Mining, Exploration, Industry, Hauling and Trading.

The Birth of an Industrialist

My family isn't rich. When I was young, I never imagined that I would become an almost-immortal Capsuleer, able to reincarnate on clones if I end up dying while I pilot a ship.

I wanted to be a baker. I didn't even wanted to space travel, I liked my life in the Assembly Plant.

But my parents sent me to the School of Applied Knowledge, considered the best school for aspiring engineers, so I could work directly with the major Caldari corporations.

After my gradutation, I had no other choice than became a full-time Industrialist. I set up my operations in the largest market hub of the galaxy: Jita.

What's Industry in EVE Online?

The industrial forces which form New Eden's markets, trade routes, and manufacturing structures are far more than meets the eye.
Every ship, module, and station available is a product of a series of events from the mining of ore to the reprocessing into minerals, through to construction as a usable product to be sold.
For every component of this journey, there are buyers, sellers, and those willing to make some cash by spinning the market in their favor.

The One who Paid for the Studies

My cousin, Luizeba Athens, isn't like me. She was born into wealth and was trained, since a small child, to become a Capsuleer.

And, while I enjoy the safety of the Jita Trading Hub, she's avid for adventures. She joined the ranks of a huge, powerful corporation called Brave Collective, and is a full-time explorer and combat pilot. She lives in the dangerous "nullsec" space, the lawless systems where there is no government and the CONCORD Police doesn't have jurisdiction: if you get attacked by a pirate or scammed by a con artist, no one will come to help you.

She's the one who paid for my studies, and also gave me a substantial loan to start my enterprise.

"Loan", if you know what I mean.

She's my de-facto boss: Mrs. Athens sends me the money and the richness she's able to amass while killing hundreds of pirates and exploring forbidden ancient ruins, and I reprocess it into useful ships and modules.

I May Have Done a Small Mistake

But I've screwed things up. I've spent a huge part of the money to discover blueprints of a very specific mining module... And I was going to corner the market and become rich! Filthy rich! It should have been profitable, I ran all the calculations! And my spreadsheets never lie!

But several other industrialists had the exact same idea, and now the market is flooded with this stupid product. What I will be doing with several thousands of them? The market doesn't move this volume even in a whole month!

I'm not sure how I'm going to pull this one out. My cousin will literally kill me outside a capsule so I can't come back to life in a clone.

This will be my end.

I'm already imagining my tombstone: Aphiel Nightwood. Newcomer Industrialist. Honest Merchant. Assassinated by her own cousin due transforming all her fortune into useless mining equipment.
