English

Hi gamer friends, usually when I talk about video games I go to retro games, firstly because I don't have the consoles, nor the PC to play the most modern games, and secondly because they transport me to my childhood when I used to buy magazines to find out about the latest releases, consoles and accessories, at that time there was no internet, and magazines were the only window to the world of video games.

All my video game magazines
.

I still have those magazines, I recently dusted them off and started to take a look at all the games reviewed from '99 to about 2004, which was when I bought the last magazine, as the internet came to our homes. Having been a child of the 90's and early 2000's is something I thank life for, because now practically everything is on a screen, we have dispensed with the physical, it is no longer common among children to meet to browse through a magazine or to borrow or exchange games on CD-ROMS or cartridges, which seemed magical to me.

20211013_161348.jpg

Today I want to show and tell you briefly about 3 magazines that I chose from my collection, my choice was a PC magazine with its CD-ROM of Demos, patches and Add-ons, (the CD-ROMs were the best of each magazine), a Nintendo magazine and a PlayStation magazine, here I tell you about them.

This edition was published in 1999, it was the first videogame magazine I had, it had a CD-ROM with playable demos, I really don't remember how I got my hands on it, if my parents bought it or if I borrowed it from a friend who never asked me for it back, because I remember that this magazine ran through many hands at school.

It was through this CD-ROM that I got to know the first PC games, including F-16 Multirole Fighter, which I have already reviewed in Hive. This magazine prominently reviews games like Grim Fandango and Tom Raider III.

I installed Grim Fandango a couple of months ago, still haven't been able to finish it, I really like it.

Tom Raider III received a 95 as a score, a great game no doubt
.

Below is a list of a portion of the games reviewed by this magazine:

  • Star Wars Rogue Squadron
  • Gangsters
  • War of the Worlds
  • Tom Raider III
  • Heretic II
  • F-16 Multirole Fighter
  • Powerslide
  • Viper Racing
  • Soccer League 98-99
  • Moto Racer 2
  • NBA Live 99
  • Blood II: the chosen
  • Capitalism Plus
  • The Feeble files
  • Populous III
  • Heroes of Might and Magic
  • Grim Fandango
  • Carmageddon III carpocalypse now
  • PC Trivial 2000

You can see what is included in the CD-ROM in the following image.

This edition was published in the year 2000, it brings me very good memories, because at school at recess time I used to meet with my friends and we would read it to comment on the games it reviewed, for us it was like the Holy Grail, we were all attracted to the magazine and soon we were a crowd around it.

This magazine reviews games from the various Nintendo consoles, and prominently features a chronology of all the Castlevania games from 1986's Vampire Killer for MSX Home Computer, to 2000's Castlevania 64 Legacy of Darkness for Nintendo 64, which I want to talk about in a future post. Likewise, it offers a guide to Super Mario Bros 3 secrets that for the time was very valuable, as it was information you couldn't find anywhere.

Alone in the Dark IV, later renamed Alone in the Dark the New Nightmare scored a 9 in rating
.

This review was more personal for me, I don't remember sharing it with my friends like the previous ones.

Some of the games it reviews are:

  • The Italian Job
  • Fur Fighters Viggo's revenge
  • Gran Turismo 3
  • Le mans 24h
  • Gift
  • Crazy Taxi
  • Rainbow Six Rogue Spear

  • All Star Baseball 2002
  • Red Faction
  • The Lion King: The Adventures of the Mighty Simba
  • Asterix
  • Goofy's fun house
  • Klonoa 2

This is as far as my post goes, I don't know if editorials continue publishing this kind of magazines but at least in my country they don't come anymore. I still have all the CD-Roms with Demos, which I have recently tried to install but for most of them it is no longer possible due to incompatibility of the operating system.

I hope you liked my post, I invite you to follow me to be aware of my post about video games.
