It seems like the economy is really struggling lately. Job openings are increasing but so are the number of applicants. It's no wonder people are feeling anxious these days. What's a person to do? The right answer is to take the job that's available. Well maybe...

If you lived in 18th-century England there are many peculiar jobs that were available. But one of these particular jobs involve your ability to swallow dice.

Be it good or bad, gambling is frowned upon in most parts of the world and throughout history. 18th-century England was no different. People would travel to clandestine gambling establishments to bet their hard earned money on a dice toss. Of course where there is illegal gambling there is also police raids.

One clever way these gambling dens got around the long arm of the law, they would employ someone to swallow the dice if a raid happened. Imagine if that was your job, sit next to the dice table, and if the police entered, grab the snake eyes and put them down your gullet.

In the gambling houses of Chicago, a similar method was used. But the dice were made out of sugar cubes. Same story, if a raid happened, someone would have to eat the dice. No Dice, No Crime, and no case. Here is an excerpt of "Fools of Fortune, by John Philip Quinn"

Of course, the dice are usually made of bone, although in a recently raided game in Chicago, the players anticipating interference on the part of the police, had their little cubes made of cut sugar, and when the officers of the law made their appearance, swallowed the dice, and there being no gaming implements found, the case against them was necessarily dismissed.
