Yo he pensado lo mismo a veces.
—¿A qué te refieres?
—No bromeo.
—Este ratón caza y come escorpiones.

An old coyote lamented his fate in the desert. Tired of wandering over miles of desolate land, he stopped under a dry tree in utter despondency.
An owl took an interest in his welfare, and approaching him asked:

-Any trouble friend?
The coyote looked sideways at the owl, thinking that he would be disturbed by being in someone else's territory.
-I don't want to bother you," said the owl, noticing the coyote's fears, "I'm only asking out of courtesy.
The coyote turned around eager to converse.
-I'm fine, thanks for asking.
-You look a little discouraged," said the owl.
The coyote was silent for a moment, then said:
-It's not easy to live in this desert, it's torture to get food every day. I haven't eaten anything since yesterday.
-I understand," said the owl, "I've thought the same thing sometimes. I especially feel down when I haven't eaten anything, but then I find some prey and the discomfort goes away.
-It must be easy for you to find your food. You have extraordinary vision, very fast flight, and besides, your prey, the mice, usually come out at night when you are most active.
The owl swooped down from the tree branch and approached the coyote to speak more closely.
-It may look that way, but the truth is different.
The coyote was intrigued.
-What do you mean?
-Well, you need to consider the fact that my prey are not always innocent mice.
-Are you going to tell me that you know any very strong or very tough mice that can put up a fight against an owl? -said the coyote laughing.
The owl just let him laugh and then asked:
-Do you know the grasshopper mouse?
The coyote shook his head.
-It's a little mouse... a tiny mouse, to tell you the truth, that can jump very high and escape my attacks with ease.
-I suppose all mice jump," said the coyote.
-But this one is a champion jumper. Besides, I must beware of his bite. If I catch him wrong, he can turn around and sink his two razor-sharp teeth into me and blind me.
-Are you serious? You're joking with me," said the coyote.
-I'm not kidding. He's a carnivorous mouse. Even the snakes are careful with him when they go out hunting at night.
The coyote seemed encouraged by the owl's story. The feeling of hunger was forgotten for a few moments, and he began to imagine what the figure of the famous little mouse looked like.
-Do you know scorpions? -The owl wanted to know.
-Of course," answered the coyote.
-This mouse hunts and eats scorpions.
-Really? That's amazing.
-The scorpion's venom doesn't affect him. After he eats one, he stands up on his hind legs and howls at the moon. So you can understand, my coyote friend, that it's not easy for me to catch this little guy.
-I didn't know anything about this," admitted the coyote.
-If a little mouse has these abilities, I'm sure you have them too. You just have to concentrate on them and use them to survive in the desert.
-You're right, I feel livelier, I even feel like hunting. I can run, climb rocks, camouflage myself with the sand. Thank you for encouraging me.
-It's been a pleasure, I hope you succeed.

The coyote continued on his way, reflecting on the little mouse's abilities and his own. The owl was happy to be able to help another creature by showing him that his misfortunes were nothing compared to his good qualities.
