Regreso al Halo (Epílogo)
—Algo hermoso tiene el universo, y es que es igual desde cualquier punto que lo veas —dijo Erwin observando la profunda oscuridad, decorada con diminutas y pálidas luminarias, del espacio intergaláctico, a poco más de un millón de años luz de la vía láctea.
—Donde quiera que estés el panorama es más o menos igual, sólo que, lo que serían estrellas en nuestro hogar, aquí son galaxias, brillando como pequeñas y tenues luces multicolor —comentó Adele, deteniéndose a su lado —. ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que partimos desde GB01?
—Hace mucho que dejé de llevar la cuenta, pero son más de nueve mil años —respondió Erwin —. Lo sé porque el mes pasado asistí a mi décimo novena sustitución corporal completa, desde que partimos —dijo con una expresión de insatisfacción en el rostro —. Ya me siento como el barco de Teseo, odio pensar en eso.
—Se lo que se siente, a mi me pasa igual, de la antigua yo sólo queda un módulo neuronal y el androide médico me dijo que en mi próxima actualización debería sustituirlo, por que ya no será compatible.
Ambos se retiraron de panel de observación y siguieron caminando en dirección al puente, a su llegada, Iwata el encargado de ingeniería los esperaba ansioso.
—Recibimos aprobación del PI3432, ya podemos activar la semilla —dijo el pálido ingeniero.
—Excelente Iwata, que esperas, puedes proceder entonces —respondió Adele.
Iwata se dio la vuelta, y miró en dirección al panel de controles frente a él, varios indicadores se activaron sin que al parecer él hiciera algo y luego, frente a todos, se proyectó una gran porción de espacio vacío en la que sólo se destacaba algo que parecía ser una esfera, cuyo tamaño sería imposible de determinar.
—Activando la semilla en 10, 9, 8… —empezó a contar el ingeniero, aparentemente sin hacer nada que acompañara a su conteo.
Al llegar a cero, la esfera emitió un estallido de luz, y se expandió, desde lo que debió ser un objeto de milímetros de tamaño, hasta alcanzar el tamaño en un gigantesco orbe, de unos doscientos kilómetros de diámetro, cuya superficie reflejaba la imagen de un cielo que no era el que les rodeaba.
El nuevo puente comunicaba con una región a más de ochocientos mil años luz de distancia en dirección a la Pequeña Nube de Magallanes.
—Todas las lecturas son correctas capitana —dijo Iwata, en cuyo cerebro cuántico, sincronizado con la IA de la nave, se proyectaban todos los datos relativos al nacimiento del nuevo puente.
—Excelente Iwata —dijo Adele —. Bien nuestro trabajo aquí terminó, dejemos que los chicos de la novena división se encarguen de la estación de monitoreo, continuemos con el viaje. Laura prepara el impulso hasta la ubicación del siguiente nodo.
—Si capitana —dijo la piloto —. Preparados para saltar al punto PI233434 —dijo al igual sin accionar ningún control o ver algún indicador, tal como antes lo había hecho Iwata.
Cuando estaba por iniciar el conteo, varios indicadores del puente se activaron, y la capitana Adele se levantó de su asiento alarmada.
—¿Que está sucediendo? — dijo sorprendida —. No es posible, estamos muy lejos de cualquier objeto conocido.
—Un objeto de enormes dimensiones se aproxima, en impulso espaciotemporal —dijo la piloto.
—¿Es una de nuestras naves? —preguntó la capitana.
—No señora, su tamaño excede los veinte kilómetros de diámetro —dijo la piloto —. No hay naves de semejante tamaño y ningún otro objeto conocido que pueda viajar a 500 Mc.
En ese momento frente a ellos, a menos de diez kilómetros de distancia, salió de impulso una gigantesca nave de forma irregular, más parecida a una ciudad que a un vehículo.
La tripulación de la Valkiria, observó con incredulidad lo que había emergido repentinamente frente a sus ojos, permaneciendo en silencio por lo que parecieron minutos, hasta que una nueva señal se activó en el panel de Erwin.
—Capitana, la nave nos saluda —dijo el operador de comunicaciones.

The new bridge connected with a region more than eight hundred thousand light-years away in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud.
-All readings are correct, Captain, -said Iwata, in whose quantum brain, synchronized with the ship's AI, all the data concerning the birth of the new bridge was being projected.
-Excellent Iwata, -said Adele-. Well our work here is done, let's let the guys from the ninth division take care of the monitoring station, let's continue with the trip. Laura prepares the drive to the location of the next node.
-Yes captain, -said the pilot- -Ready to jump to point PI233434- she said at the same time without activating any control or seeing any indicator, as Iwata had done before.
As the countdown was about to begin, several indicators on the bridge activated, and Captain Adele got up from her seat in alarm.

At that moment in front of them, less than ten kilometers away, a gigantic ship of irregular shape, more like a city than a vehicle, came out of impulse.
The crew of the Valkyrie, watched in disbelief at what had suddenly emerged before their eyes, remaining silent for what seemed like minutes, until a new signal was activated on Erwin's panel.
-Captain, the ship hails us, -said the communications operator.
