Splinterlands - Is Silver League Best ROI on Investment?

My post from yesterday had an interesting comment from @revise.leo that I would like to respond to.

I thought to respond with another blog post rather than a comment because I think what I have to say will help many who are new players or wish to make a large sum of profit in Splinterlands. Basically what are the best ways to get the best rate of return (ROI) in the game?

I have been playing Splinterlands for over a year and the best ranking I have ever reached was Champion III. The rankings have been revised in a couple of iterations over the years and in the present system I am only able to reach a peak of Diamond I. I have yet to get into the Champion league ever since the latest update of rankings were implemented. Even with all the reivisions and modifications in ranks I have always found that Silver League has earned me the most for the money I put in the game. Here are the reasons why...

Buy In Low in Silver League

Every league has a limitation on the level at each rarity players can use for summoners. In Diamond and Champion the limitation set to max levels. However in Silver league it is not max, but not lowest either.

As noted in picture above the rare summoner can be used up to level 4 while the epic is level 3 and legend at level 2. These levels are note worthy because the amount of cards necessary to level up the summoners to the levels are low compared to max levels in diamond/champion.

Take for example in Alpha rare summoner:

image.png

It takes eight cards stacked to obtain a level 4 rare summoner. In turn this is the silver league is limiting players up to only level 4 summoners be used in battles. 8 cards to reach this limitation is a lot less than if we were in diamond league. Where in diamond league it takes 86 cards to reach max level 8 summoner. Although by rule it is not required that a player have max level in order to play in diamond league or above. However not maximizing a summoner leaves players venerable when facing an opponent that does have a max summoner.

The leveling process requires more cards in newer sets. For instance in Beta series it requires 11 cards to reach level 4 and 115 to level 8.

It gets even more difficult to max summoners at highest level when its Untamed series.

image.png

Although it still only takes 115 cards to level 8 for an Untamed rare summoner the requirement to reach level 4 has risen to 25 cards. The thought of requiring more cards to raise summoners at low levels from 1 thru 5 is likely do to the required buy in of cards needed to level up were too low in Alpha and Beta. The Untamed series was to combat this by making players spend more resources in order to raise the summoner's level.

Bottom line to get to level 4 summoner it takes far fewer cards to do so than to have the same summoner at level 8. Therefore a player in order to stay competitive in the league they play will require less cards stacked at silver league than in diamond/champion leagues.

DEC rewards and Chests in Daily Quests - For Silver League

A major reason why players push themselves to see how high they can go in ranking basically comes down to earning more. For a player who wins a match in diamond/champion they will win more DEC per battle and at the completion of a daily quest earn more reward chests than the same player competing in silver league.

How much more do higher rank players earned compare to those who play in silver league?

image.png

Snapshot extracted from in game's current top battle in Silver league nailed the owner with a +49 DEC received. Then there is the following one with diamond league's best top battle.

image.png

Snapshot above is listing a +175 DEC to the winner of the match. Compare the battle reward one can see that diamond league fetches slightly under 4x the amount as if the player was winning in silver league. These numbers are assuming the DEC energy bar is the same for both.

Then there is the daily quest and season rewards. For silver league the max at silver I limits players to earn 4 chests in daily quest and 18 chests at end of season. While in diamond I players can earn 14 chests in daily quest and 60 chests at end of season. The ratio of earn chests between diamond I and silver I are not more than 5x. Similar to how much DEC won in battle compared between diamond and silver a difference within 4x-5x.

Then lies the question I have, does a level 8 summoner require about 5x more cards than a level 4 summoner to max? The answer is no!

In alpha series it takes 8 cards to level 4 while 5 times that is 40 which makes it a level 6 summoner instead of a max level 8 summoner. Players who choose to play up to diamond league and higher will need close to 10 times the amount of cards to max level a summoner. However the rewards earned at diamond versus silver is not 10 times!

Champion league on the other hand can earn over 250 DEC per a battle won. This too is not 10 times the winning compare to the silver league. While it takes more cards to max a summoner at higher leagues the rewards earned at the higher leagues compare to the lower leagues do not go hand in hand with the amount of cards owned.

In short it takes less resources to maximize a summoner for a silver league battle compare to that of a diamond/champion league. The amount of rewards earned in a silver league battle is not more than 5x than that of diamond league battle. This leads to a lower ratio of rewards to cards being played at higher rank leagues. So if you wish to want to earn more with less playing the silver league is ideal.
