Our inheritance and a trip down memory lane , and even back to 1887 ~ family antique and memorabilia

How adorable this is this photo, its ours, we inherited this and many more photos and memorabilia.

It's been a few months but we lost my father-in-law in the past year and my mother-in-law in the corona period this year. This was awful! Of course we all experience this in our lives, but when they both go to heaven, the loss is only greater. It is then also important to clean up, sort ou, distribute, give away, sell and clean up all the stuff fromast. That has been in parts that we have been working on as a family lately.

For this #thoughtfuldailypost i wanted to share so treasures. You and me will have to take a ride back in time. A trip down memory lane hopefully. With all the documents and memorabilia.

All kept for years and now passed on to us.

Like this document. They saved some old documents from the parents of my father in law. This is a document from the army from the year 1899. I think this was a document for obtaining an exemption from military service. it was called Brotherly Service. I don't know if this exists in the rest of the world, but it is a possibility to get exemption from military service. It was 3 brothers and we think this belongs to the youngest brother. I don't know if it worked. In any case, there was no evidence of this among these things.

And how cool is this letter to the aunt and uncle so even more further back in history. The date is from 1887, its in plastic and its in reasonably good state. Maybe we need to frame it but there is so much. We have choices to make!

This is the announcement for the engagement from the dad and mother from my father in law. Looks at that beautiful paper. The flowers are stranced out from the inner side to the outside of the paper and it gorgeously detailed.

The grandfather and dad of my father in law were fireman, and were stationed in Rotterdam, this is a letter from 1938 when his dad was there and its a pass that he was in one of the troops of the corps.

The four men in the photograph can all be him, we just don't know, the photograph has nothing on the back and hubby doesn't recognise any of the four as his family, but its a great find, and beautifully saved in the box.

I sorted all the photos and postcards. Apparently you had the choice to print photos as cards, because we found some that were send by mail. The paper is yellow but the images are still so nice. The stamps have all different years but all are from before World War II.

This folder , we have four boxes of stuff but we try to sort out one by one, and that gives me the chance to do a few blogs about the inheritance. This folder has all things like foodstamps, poststamps and pasports from after World War II. Some earlier but those we are saving in another box.

This is grandfather. This I think was glued onto a passé partout. The paper is thick like carton. Maybe this was in a frame before I don't know. But he looks so soigné ! He is really posing between the flower baskets. The antique is very nice, I think there is a radiotor on the right, or its a little cabinet.

This is the call for the medical examination from 1927. Also in very good state. Its saved between the personal passes and the passport.
There were also postcards from 1915, 1921 and 1925, the stamps are posted in Rotterdam aswell. Some were for the holidays, some were to congratulate friends I guess. Some writing is like a dochters handwriting not readable, sorry.

Proof of corps, for the fire department of Rotterdam.
Dated 1927 and stationed at the Voorstraat in the city center.
I know from the stories that there were other places where he was stationed all well known in Rotterdam, I may have to sort a pile for just fireman stuff and history. Don’t know yet.

Do you remember poetry albums, where you let your loved ones and family write some nice verses or texts from the bible in, together with a piece of photo and give it as a gift, well I found a few of those aswell. How precious. I had one when I was little.

This is the wedding picture of the grandparents of hubby, I love the hat and the gloves on him and the gorgeous big bouquet of flowers she holds. Also she was fashionable at the time already with that lovely hairpiece. keeping this one to, I hope to find a wedding picture of my parents in law aswell and keep them together in a frame.

These pictures I am taking out from the pile and from the two boxes and putting them in a frame. We think we will have a great spot for them to shine in the new day and age.

This is the document and birthcertificate of another family member from the year 1817, we think its from over-grandmother, we are not sure, it might be even a generation before that. The document was almost ripped, so we put it in plastic again.

Foodstamps from the war, all in perfect conditions. Dated 1944, I know they must be from my grandfather and his family. He is from 1932. The yellow was for meat, blue was bread and the pink said reserve , I think that is spare but for what products I have no clue.

This all made me think back to the visit I had with the class of C in 2020 before covid hit and we were still allowed to go to a museum. It is in Rotterdam and its called : “Museum 1940”.
It was a great day and we saw all old bombings of the city of Rotterdam and all that people donated to the museum to educate the new generation to never forget what happened more than 70 years ago.

Wars are still very much in the news, and all are useless if you ask me, but I am a lover not a fighter, I hate fights so maybe I am the wrong person to ask an opinion of. The fact that we still know and remember is important.

Thats why we will be sorting out the stuff we have and will we contact the museum department to try to see if they want things for the permanent exhibition. I have no idea how long it will take us but that doesn’t matter, I will Ofcourse make a blog about it.

HERE IS A TAG LINK FOR THE MUSEUM
