Close encounter with a small Grasshopper or Acrididae || Encuentro cercano con un pequeño Saltamontes o Acrídido

Welcome Dear Lovers of the Insect world and Photography

The little fellow that I present to you today came to my bed the night after I was discharged from the hospital, after being hospitalized for 19 days due to complications from Covid-19. I do not know if it is really true that these friendly insects bring luck, but for me it was a sign of good omen. I took it as a message from the universe that at last, after so many hardships, everything would start to go well.

As you can see he was very tame, hahaha he was walking by my hand for a while, although he was not a very good model, he really didn't stay still. That's why the pictures didn't look very good, but I let him be, I didn't want to hurt him. Besides, it was quite a challenge to take pictures with only one hand, especially taking into account that my motor skills were still diminished as a result of the Covid-19.

According to what I was able to read, my little visitor belongs to the great order of Orthoptera or Orthoptera, which includes Crickets, Grasshoppers, Locusts and the Gryllotalpidae or Mole Crickets. In total, this order of insects groups within its ranks approximately 19 thousand species spread all over the planet. Although, it is necessary to emphasize that most of the species prefer to live in tropical climates.

Now speaking specifically of the little animal that I show you in the images, if you look at its head, you will notice that it has a conical shape. This morphological characteristic indicates, according to the information I could find, that it belongs to the super family of the Acrididae or Acrididae. Its ease to move from one place to another has helped it to spread throughout the world, grouping more or less 7 thousand species. There are several names by which they are popularly known, depending on the place where they are found they can be called Locusts, Grasshoppers or Tucuras.

I am in Venezuela and here we call this insect Grasshopper, now taking into account my location, my little roommate could belong to the subfamily of the Leptysminae. According to what I read, this group includes 21 different genera which have made their habitat the American continent. However, I also read that most of the Grasshopper species belong to the Cyrtacanthacridinae, so, there is a possibility that he is a member of this subfamily, spread worldwide.

The truth is, based on the fact that I am a neophyte in this subject, it is impossible for me to say with certainty, the subfamily to which the specimen I managed to photograph belongs. And let alone, the type of species it is, I'll leave that to the experts in this scientific field. But, something I do think I can do is to tell you a little about the Grasshopper in general.

For example, a very interesting peculiarity is that although they normally live solitary lives, if they find a group of grasshoppers of the same species, they can get used to coexist with them. Another singularity of this type of insects, which caught my attention, is that in their solitary life, although they have wings, they do not usually fly much. Now, when they live together in groups of the same species, the story is different. Apparently, when they are in contact with other individuals of the same variety, they begin to release certain pheromones, which awaken their migratory instincts, while stimulating the strengthening and growth of their wings.

Now, this phenomenon described in the previous paragraph has a pro and a con, on the one hand, it is beneficial for grasshoppers, because it allows them to move to other locations. This benefits them, because they can find more food and also avoid having to compete with other species for the same territory. These behavioral changes in these insects are not always beneficial, at least for humans. Being in groups facilitates the reproduction of these little animals, so their population can grow rapidly. This can be fatal for crops, as they become truly devastating pests of large extensions of wild vegetation and cultivated areas.

In another order of ideas, at a morphological level, these little friends have 3 pairs of legs, the rear pair being significantly longer than the other 4. Their long hind limbs are precisely the ones that allow them to perform their characteristic jumps. In fact, these little jumpers are really amazing, just imagine, when jumping they are able to rise to a height equivalent to twenty times the length of their body, don't you think that's great? On the other hand, they have two pairs of wings, which as I explained in previous paragraphs, to my surprise, do not necessarily serve them to fly.

In the case of their jaws, they are optimized to chew their main food, leaves, and they do it in large quantities, so when they gather in large groups, they can be a pest for crops. Since the beginning of history, mankind has witnessed on several occasions, how swarms of these small insects devour entire crops, putting entire villages on the brink of starvation. In my country, Venezuela, there are records of attacks of this pest since colonial times, and the last record dates back to 1988. Coincidentally, in my native state of Sucre, supposedly originating in a place very close to Carúpano, the city where I was born. It was the coastal town of Rio Caribe, producing significant damage to vegetation and crops. We all know that family reunions are great, but this case is the exception, the family reunions of these little friends are fatal to the point that the migratory phenomena of this type of insects are considered the most dangerous in the world.
