The family Chrysomelidae, which belongs to the popular order Coleoptera, is one of the most numerous and diverse groups of beetles found in terrestrial ecosystems, with more than 30,000 different species. These insects are phytophagous and many of their members are considered very dangerous pests in agricultural production systems. Likewise, talking about this family implies not only being captivated by the beautiful characteristics of some of the specimens of these beetles, but also highlighting a taxonomic group widely studied in the world, considering it necessary to know their geographical distributions, behaviors and feeding habits in order to control their populations within agroecosystems.

This family has an estimated 2500 genera distributed in 12 subfamilies, being some of the best known the Chrysomelinae, Cassidinae, Bruchinae, Galerucinae or the Eumolpinae, these are some of the 12 subfamilies that can be more easily appreciated, although obviously it will also depend a lot on the country where they are found. As mentioned above, these beetles have a definite feeding habit towards plant organisms, being what is technically known as phytophagous living beings; in addition, these insects can devour plants at different stages of their lives, so they can be considered pests in both larval and adult stages, hence the frequent problems with these insects in agriculture.

Generally the species of this family are very small and given the biological diversity that they present, many times identifying them accurately is a great challenge, the specimen presented in the photographic material is one of the most difficult species to identify, since it does not have any type of coloration or any characteristic that makes it easily recognizable. It should be noted that, despite the fact that in the photos it has been considered from the tribe Galerucini, this may also belong to another tribe such as Alticini, given the kinship it has with some species of the genus Luperaltica; however, it does not meet all the visible characteristics to be considered from that genus.

On the other hand, the subfamily Galerucinae houses a tribe known as Galerucini which has a large number of genera that do share many similar characteristics to the specimen in the photographs; so, it could be placed within that taxonomic group.

On the other hand, some of the genera in which could enter the beetle of the photos would be the Galerucella and Pyrrhalta, since these have very identical specimens, but the problem arises, in that the most similar ones have no confirmed presence within South America, which leaves my research somewhat fruitless; it may even be some unidentified or unknown species so far. The identifications of many arthropods are not always easy, we must remember that these are the most numerous living beings that exist in the world, mainly when we refer to insects, so new findings are constantly made and constant changes are made in species that seemed to be already identified, so many of the data that can be found in books or websites, may already be outdated, requiring an update to obtain confirmed and valid data for studies or scientific research.

In spite of not having completely identified this insect, we can touch general topics about its characteristics and everything related to its behavior. This beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae and the subfamily Galerucinae, has a somewhat peculiar morphology, first we note its predominant coloration, having a beige thorax and abdomen, the head and elytra have a black color, while other specimens collected had instead of black a brown color in these areas, probably this is part of a sexual dimorphism between males and females. Similarly, as can be seen, the entire dorsal region makes it appear that the insect is made of wood, this feature helps this small beetle to camouflage with the bark of trees and given its size, it can be difficult to appreciate while not in motion.

Regarding their size, this is located between 3 to 4 millimeters in length, being slightly larger females compared to males. Their bodies are elongated and due to the appearance of the elytra, these make their bodies look somewhat square; their antennae are of the filiform type, they are also somewhat elongated but do not exceed the length of their bodies, this helps to differentiate in part the members of the family Chrysomelidae from the Cerambycidae or longicorn beetles.

On the other hand, on the dorsal region of their thorax they possess a poorly defined black spot, thanks to this they can be differentiated from other species such as Galerucella lineola.

In this photograph you can see in detail their anterior wings (elytra) and posterior wings. As I have already mentioned in previous articles, the first pair of wings of coleoptera is completely modified, so instead of being membranous, they are hardened by the action of chitin and other proteins that are part of their organisms, the function of this pair of wings is to provide protection to the posterior pair which is completely membranous and is the one used directly for flight; The fact of being membranes, makes this last pair of wings very fragile and delicate, for this reason after years of evolution they acquired the elytra to be able to continue enduring the environmental pressures, to this they owe much of their success in terrestrial ecosystems.

Regarding their reproduction and development, these insects showed greater reproductive activity at night, even they are hardly noticeable during the day, the female is slightly larger than the male, has a lighter color, while the male has black elytra. During the courtship process, the male makes slow approaches and stimulates the female with its antennae, then climbs on the female and initiates copulation, this usually lasts a few minutes, the female during this process remains motionless and when she moves carries the male on top of her.

The larvae are initially black, later they acquire a yellowish color as they increase their size, coleopteran larvae do not have false legs as it happens in lepidopteran caterpillars, the only noticeable legs in these beetle larvae are the 3 pairs of real legs that are located in their thoracic area.

This species was sighted and collected on plants of the genus heliotropium belonging to the family Boraginaceae. Being uncertain about the species of this coleopteran, it is not possible to determine whether it has an appetite for other plant species, especially those of agricultural importance. In turn, as can be seen in the photographic material, both larvae and adults are mandibulate organisms, so they make holes in the leaves when they feed, causing damage that can be irreparable if their populations are very high in a given plant. Likewise, it is also very common to find tiny black dots on the leaves, these correspond to the excrements of this type of small beetles belonging to the family Chrysomelidae.

@abneagro(8).png

In this photo you can see the tiny size of this coleopteran compared to a finger, as another fact, the small black dot that can be seen on the right is its excrement, as I had already mentioned these can also be seen in large quantities on the leaves. These insects are very active in the afternoon when the sun goes down, at that time both larvae and adults come out of their hiding places and feed together. Given their size it was difficult to obtain good photos, to obtain a higher resolution we used the help of a magnifying glass, however the photos lose quality for this reason, even so you can see a lot of details in the photographic compilation shown.
