Sometimes we see a theme posted in the NeedleWorkMonday Community throughout the week. It’s nothing that’s planned. It just so happens that more than one needle artist decided to create and share the same type of project.

Today in this case, I will be presenting to you a flower theme called ‘Flower Shower’ where I highlight the different needle techniques used to make these gorgeous flower appliqués and accessories.

Sewing

Sewing has become one of the most popular techniques that is shared within the community. A project can be done entirely with sewing alone or it can be coupled with other needle crafts. For instance, it is often used as a finishing touch on projects ie. sewing in loose ends on crochet work.

It is a very versatile craft that can be done completely by hand or with a sewing machine. Some needle artists prefer to use both ways depending on what part of their project they are working on.

Some things are easier sewn by hand, especially when a piece cannot fit properly under a machine. This hand sewing method takes longer but is just as effective if not more. You have more control which is great for smaller projects, decoration, and repairs and you can also choose exactly where the stitches go, how long they are and even how the fabric is attached.

This first flower was hand sewn using a folding method to form pleats.

This next flower was also made completely by hand sewing. It has three layers; two of ribbon and one of lace.

Continuing on this flower used both hand sewing and sewing machine methods to accomplish a ruffled look for a rose shape.

Embroidery

Embroidery is another favorite needle art in our community. Since we first started back in 2017 we’ve had many come along to share their love for this craft.

We are constantly being introduced to new styles of embroidery. It really is a beautiful art that can be made with a variety of colors and shapes and is easily customizable. The goal of embroidery work is to create a pattern from the thread.

These embossed flowers were embroidered using the turkey stitch. The first two flowers were made using 3 strands of thread and the last with six strands.
