Las iguanas pueden llegar a medir hasta dos metros de largo desde la cabeza a la cola. llegan a pesar hasta mas de 15 kg. Son herbívoros y su reproducción es por medio de huevos- su color verde les permite camuflarse entre la vegetación además, tiene una cresta que recorre todo el dorsal de su cuerpo. las iguanas tienen patas muy cortas y cinco dedos en cada pata, cada pata con garras muy afiladas. Su cola es larga y la utilizan para defenderse dando "latigazos" a quien interfiera con su tranquilidad.

Son animales muy solitarios, y se les ve en comunidad en épocas de reproducción. Su hábitat se ve afectada por las continuas construcciones, tal como el caso de los humedales en Nordelta, Buenos Aires con el tema de los carpinchos. los cuales se les ve "invadiendo" propiedades, cuando en realidad son los humanos encargados.
