Mi madre acaba de cumplir ochenta y seis años, dentro de veinte yo tendría esa misma edad. Me gusta pensar que al igual que ella yo también viviré largo tiempo, para ayudarme a lograrlo me imagino que las cosas mejoraran.
Veinte años pasan con mucha rapidez, uno casi ni se da cuenta. Los cambios pueden ser impresionantes, lo hemos visto con el gran desarrollo de internet y las redes sociales en ese lapso de tiempo, lo que ha cambiado nuestra forma de relacionarnos.
Pero también en veinte años pueden ocurrir cambios que signifiquen un retroceso en nuestra forma de vida. De eso soy testigo…
Hace veinte años, mi país, Venezuela, tenía todas las condiciones para mejorar sus condiciones de vida. Sin embargo, una serie de decisiones políticas erróneas frenaron nuestro avance, nos desconectaron del ritmo del mundo, nos devolvieron al pasado y pusieron al país en un estado de ruina. Twenty years ago, my country, Venezuela, had all the conditions to improve its living conditions. However, a series of erroneous political decisions slowed down our progress, disconnected us from the rhythm of the world, returned us to the past and put the country in a state of ruin. The consequence has been great poverty and the displacement of millions of people seeking a better future elsewhere in the world.
I like to think that in twenty years we can reverse that damage and find a way to bring prosperity back to our country.

Genetic engineering will make it possible to eliminate most diseases by introducing modifications to our DNA. The development of artificial organs will make it possible to replace most damaged organs, thus substantially increasing life expectancy.
In environmental matters, it is very likely that the problems derived from global warming will begin to be solved through the use of new sources of clean energy from hydrogen.
Donde veo los mayores desafíos es en nuestras organizaciones sociales y en la forma de relacionarnos.
En los actuales momentos estamos presenciando un descontento mundial hacia la Democracia y hacia la clase política en general, eso abre una puerta enorme a la inestabilidad. Puede ser que en el corto plazo la tendencia mundial sea hacia los autoritarismos. Pero una vez que se conozca la crudeza de la vivencia autoritaria es muy probable que se vuelva a repensar cómo profundizar la Democracia.
Creo que en el futuro la única forma de tener un mundo más humano es profundizando la cooperación, eso implica, desde luego, repensar todo el sistema económico.
Con nuestro actual esquema basado en la competencia la tendencia será a crear mayores monopolios, que tendrán la capacidad de dominar completamente la vida de la población. Eso lo vemos con dos ejemplos del presente: El caso de Google con el dominio de internet y el de China con la producción de transistores. Google es capaz de modelar nuestros gustos y China, si se lo propone, pudiera hacer colapsar la industria electrónica mundial.
En el siglo XXI hemos visto que se ha acentuado la tendencia al aislamiento, las personas están más conectadas que nunca pero menos relacionadas entre sí. Hemos ido perdiendo la capacidad de involucrarnos con la vida de los otros. De cierto modo somos menos empáticos. De seguir esa tendencia el mundo del futuro sería de mayor aislamiento, una sociedad donde las personas casi no tengan roce con los otros. Es una opción posible pero a mi modo de ver, de poca calidad humana.
Otro asunto que nos ha mostrado la sociedad actual es la tendencia creciente hacia el aburrimiento. Millones de personas no encuentran qué hacer con su tiempo libre, han ido perdiendo el impulso a la creatividad. Este es el tiempo de las depresiones, los ansiolíticos, y la búsqueda desenfrenada de entretenimientos con los que evadir la realidad.
Pero hay algo esperanzador. Es innegable que también en estos tiempos el ser humano ha sentido el impulso de reencontrarse con la espiritualidad. Puede ser que en el futuro este impulso haya prendido en muchos corazones, dotando a las personas de claros propósitos de vida. Eso indudablemente que nos daría la capacidad de establecer relaciones más humanas. Todo puede ser…
