If you've read George Orwell's dystopian novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four", this little equation will be familiar. The protagonist, Winston Smith, is tortured until he admits that two plus two equals five. He's forced by the powers that be to believe, to truly believe their lies.

Winston, as well as any other citizen of Oceania, is not allowed to believe any other truths than those spread by the totalitarian state, called "Big Brother"; this is where the slogan "Big Brother's Watching You" originates, and it's very much the truth of our current society. We do live in a surveillance state and many individuals don't know what's true anymore. For some, two plus two really does equal five, and they will lash out at anyone who would try to pull them back into the real world where the answer to the equation is four. Well, they're all wrong, the answer to everything is 42...
Never before in modern history have we seen mass-delusion so profound and so far reaching than during the 2020 general elections in America. Even before those elections started Trump and his goons spread the "news" that the upcoming elections are not to be trusted. And before that he laid the groundwork through the power of repetition by calling out the "fake media" at every chance he got. Now, we all know the mainstream media are indeed fake, that's not the problem. The problem is that Trump redefined their fakeness to mean anything negative about himself. Remember that he won the 2016 elections against Clinton; not one word about the elections being rigged back then. He started the constant lies from the fake media the day after his inauguration; he claimed that the crowd at the inauguration was the biggest in history, when anyone with eyes could see this was not true. That's when he trapped his followers into believing his words over their own eyes. His second press secretary afterwards even commented that the first press secretary simply worked with "alternative facts" to come to the conclusion that Trump's inauguration crowd was indeed the biggest ever. And she did that without batting an eye...
And the four (two plus two) years of constant lies and broken promises culminated during the 2020 elections when Trump et al repeated over and over again that the elections were stolen, that the voting machines were rigged in a conspiracy involving the Democrats, Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, Spain and Germany, that the mail-in votes can't be trusted when these have been used forever by the military and expats and so on. More than 60 law-suits over voter-fraud later, all lost by Trump with not one shred of evidence for the alleged fraud, his followers still believed that their Great Leader was the rightful winner of the elections. And we all know what happened next; the storming of the Capitol on January 6th. And even that is blamed on their ideological opponents; Trumpists fall for the lie that this insurrection was orchestrated by Antifa an BLM. Surely the QAnon sign carrying far-right Trump supporters had nothing to do with it...
It was crazy when it all happened, and it seems even crazier when looking back. Especially when we learn that even to this day more than half the Republican voter base still believes that the elections were stolen, that Trump is the rightful president of the United States of America. How do we ever pull those people back into reality, where the rest of us reside? I really don't know. What more evidence do these people need? It's surreal and scary if you ask me. And I have no answers. The "post-truth society" is creeping up on us, inch by inch, and I don't know how to stop it...
