Thousands of migrants arrived under the bridge that connects the cities of Del Rio in Texas and Siyadud Akunya in Mexico, creating an improvised camp in the heat. The difficult conditions in the camp at the border show what a humanitarian challenge the President of the USA, Joseph Biden, is facing, while the number of those arrested at the border is the highest in the last 20 years.
Temperatures in that border area reach 37 degrees Celsius, and there is little food and water, so hundreds of migrants are forced to return to Mexico in order to be supplied with basic foodstuffs, Reuters reports.
Migrants are mostly from Haiti, and there are also those from Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.
Biden, a Democrat who took office in January, lifted many of the strict immigration measures introduced by his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump.
Biden, however, has found himself between pro-migrant groups and some Democrats who criticize him for not doing more to help migrants, on the one hand, and opponents who believe his policies have encouraged illegal immigration, on the other.
Both migrants and Mexican officials believe that the number of migrants at the border will increase in the coming days.
