Wolves are animals that have been fascinating humans for a long time. Lengends, songs and even modern films have been written about them.

Most people only know the grey wolf, but there are more than 30 subspecies found in the Northern hemisphere.

Wolves live together as a pack and they also hunt together, roam together and play together. They do all of this and maintaining an important role in the ecosystem.

The average wolf has a total of 42 teeth in its mouth with which it can hunt and tear off the meat from the prey.

Wolves mate for life.

In the pack, different individuals play different roles. Here are four roles. Alpha, Female alpha, Beta, and the Omega

The Alpha is the leader of the pack and its mate is called the female alpha. The beta is the other wolves and the Omega is the lowest ranking member in the pack and they will live on the outskirts of the pack and normally eat last. They can be male or female.

In a small pack only the dominant male and female will breed, but in larger packs some of the other females may also choose to carry young.

They are pregnant for 2-3 months and can give birth to 6-8 puppies. They breed in early spring so that the pups are born in the warmest time of year.

The puppies are born with closed eyes and stunted noses. The same as with dogs, they will walk within 2 weeks. If they survive their first year, they will hunt alongside the rest of the pack. Unfortunately only one or two of the puts will survive up to one year. The pups will reach their full size at around 2 years old.

In the wild a wolf will have a lifespan of 4-8 years, but it has been documented that in captivity they can live up to 15 years.

The oldest wolf alive was named Madadh, she lived to be 19 years old with the help of her caretakers.

The wolf loves to eat deer and as with many other animals, their predators are mostly humans.
