The coyote can easily be mistaken for a dog or wolf and the reason is because they are a relative of dogs, wolves and jackal.

This animal is a predator which means it hunts other animals and live off meat. They have a wide
variety of food they will eat and besides from being meat eaters, they will also eat fruit and vegetables which make them omnivores.

They are found in the whole of North America, from Mexico down to Alaska. Because of the different
areas they live in, the colour of their coats will differ. Coyotes found in the desert, will have a lighter colour than those living in the mountains.

As wolves do, coyotes also live in groups which we call packs. The members of the pack are
related, so it is like a family.

When they go out to hunt, they hunt in pairs to make it easier to catch their prey.

Once a year a female can give birth to up to 6 puppies. Unfortunately not all of them will survive to
adulthood. Once the male puppies reach adulthood, they will leave the pack to go and find their own area/territory and start their own pack. The female pups will stay in the pack.

If there is an area where coyotes and wolves live, the wolves will in time drive the coyotes away.
They are in competition for the same food and since the wolves are larger and their packs bigger, they will win the fight.

Coyotes have no problem to adapt in a new area and they are also not very picky where they find their food. They will get it out of the trash if they need to or eat rats and even small pets.

Since they so easily adapt in a new area they are not an endangered or threatened species which means they will not have a lot of trouble surviving humans and nature.
