The Miracle of Fruits (in Colombia)

I love the idea of Nature as an open air pharmacy — something they’re very aware of in Colombia.

Here, we start our day, typically, with fresh fruit juice (sometimes, freshly-picked from our farm): guava, mandarin, mango, papaya or berries. Each full of flavor and busting with all kinds of goodness.

But, my favorite — the most exotic and nutritional — is a minor miracle named guanoabana or soursop.

Over the years, when visiting Colombia, I’ve usually had this fruit as a juice, mixed with water or preferably milk.

But, this year is the first time I eat it, straight, and it’s a tart treat!

Speaking of treats, today, a friend stopped by and served us a new soup we had not tried before (and this is a soup culture).

Ajiaco is a soup from Bogota, the country capital, which is more cosmopolitan & colder than Medellin, where I usually stay.

It’s a chicken soup with corn and potatoes, a special spice called guascas and served with sour cream, guacamole and capers.
