I love pesto — with pasta, tuna, or as a spread with just about any sandwich! Nothing is like the home made-stuff. Garden-grown basil makes all the difference and then just add garlic cloves, roasted pine nuts, grated Parmesan, olive oil, salt, pepper and lemon juice.
Sage, spinach and dill are exciting alternatives for Basil, I hear. Experimentation, I learned, was inspired by different tastes of pesto in Italy. For example, you can also use walnuts, instead of pine nuts, or pecorino cheese rather than Parmesan.
