Fred's Van
It had been a month since my last visit to Fred's Van, the free food charity that I volunteer at, so it was time to mosey on down and see what how I can help out this time.
The Menu
My first task upon arrival is to put my backpack away, wash my hands, put on a name badge and help create what we call "take home packs".
These are bags that contain things like bread, apples, oranges, potatoes, tomatoes, celery, cans of Coke / other fizzy drinks, chocolate, etc.
Usually stuff donated by Second Byte or donations that are low on the use by date.

My second task is to set up tables, chairs and cultery ready for people to come and take a seat.
Tonight's entree was a slice of pizza provided by Roman Pizza. There's usually a choice between different styles of pizza.

The main item on the menu tonight is a BBQ provided by Golden Grove Lions Club.

For dessert tonight there was a selection of pastries and with either custard or icecream.

Coffee, tea and Milo (a popular local chocolate drink) and cordial are available for free throughout.
We had a crowd of around 50 people, including kids.
It can get rather messy and when everyone's gone the real clean up begins.
This means emptying bins, wiping down tables and putting them away, packing up chairs and sweeping / mopping the floor.
Occasionally, there will be left overstuff to take home too.
It feels good to both help out those in need but also give back to those who helped me at my lowest.
Please consider volunteering your time or even donating to a charity because they genuinely help people.

Until next time, see you in the kitchen!
Be kind to yourselves.
