My Story About Odading and Cakwe, Traditional Food from West Java

Some time ago. I bought my favorite snacks when I was little. This is a traditional food in Indonesia. I bought this near the boarding house. I bought cakwe, onde-onde, odading and risol. Odading that I bought there are various flavors. Chocolate, green beans and plain.

For plain odading, it is a food with a genuine taste. Odading green beans and chocolate that have been created according to the taste that is liked by the people of Indonesia. This food, cures my longing for this food. Back when I was little, almost every morning I bought this food for breakfast.

I often buy odading and cakwe. As for risol, the food my mother makes every week. Actually there is a story about cakwe and odading food. the background for these two foods, is very much different. Especially in West Java, Odading and Cakwe are sold together.

Odading has existed since the Dutch colonialism in Indonesia. Odading is called pillow cake or fried bread in West Java. It is fat and has a sesame or sugar topping on the surface of the cake. Odading has been included in the popular grammar literature dictionary. In the past, this odading had no name.

This food dough is made from wheat flour and sugar. Until one day, a little Dutch boy cried to his mother to buy him a cake that had no name. The child's mother was curious about the shape of the food.

Then, the mother called the cake seller. And the cake seller opened the sale. the child's mother said "O, dat ding?" in Dutch. In Indonesian it means, "O, that thing?". The cake seller also told the incident to the people in his village. Until the seller gave a name to the cake.

Unlike Odading, Cakwe's story is set in heartache and betrayal. Cakwe comes from China with a savory and delicious taste. Usually eaten with gravy, porridge, soy milk or gravy. In Indonesia, cakwe and odading cannot be separated. In fact, when they parted ways, it seemed that something was wrong. At my place, the auto odading seller also sells cakwe.

Cakwe has a different story and history to odading. The creation of this Cakwe was triggered by the people's anger over the death of General Yue Fei. Cakwe comes from the Hokkien dialect which means "fried ghost". Yue fei here was a prominent general in the Song Dynasty. In the XII century, he was the greatest general of the song. He is known as a general who is loyal to the country. Often wins every battle.

In fact, according to some stories, the general's body has a tattoo written directly by his mother. This general is popular and loved by the people. He is famous for his leadership against the jinn army. However, Prime Minister Qin Hui, who was influenced by his wife, framed the general. As a result, Yue Fei was sentenced to death by Emperor Gaozong.

The people were furious over the general's death. But people dare not protest in public. Then there was a husband and wife couple named Wang Xiaoer and Li Si who came up with the idea of making flour-based foods with human shapes upside down and fried. They sell with "Fried Ghost" Shouts. Hui named after the prime minister Qin Hui

Two layers of flour dough shaped like a pair of humans whose backs are turned over. When fried, this food looks like it wants to come out and explode. Although made with a background that represents people's emotions, cakwe has a salty taste that is very popular with the community. Moreover, Indonesian people really like this food. I always eat this with chili sauce.
