Budget beating Mixed Grill for Food Flinging Food Fight Friday

Food, glorious food!
Hot sausage and mustard!
While we're in the mood --
Cold jelly and custard!
Peas, pudding and saveloys!
What next is the question?
Rich gentlemen have it, boys --
In-di-gestion!
Lyrics by Lionel Bart

Recognise the lyrics? Perhaps if you're a little older you will?
We're talking about the classic musical Oliver of course!

Now those boys in the workhouse knew all about hunger and so young Oliver joined a group of urchins and got trained as a purse snatcher!

Sadly, hunger is becoming a reality for many all over the world as unemployment rates rise under Covid 19 lockdowns!

Another Friday in lockdown paradise almost over here in the southern hemisphere.

Besides playing musical chairs day after day - sitting in front of the PC, at the dining room table, in front of the television, the balcony for a cup of tea, taking a walk in the garden or going on an exciting outing to buy...food...or meds...as that's all we're allowed to do here, I've been real busy in the kitchen trying to keep sane!
We can't even go to the beach or the park and if we want to go for a walk, it can only be between 6-9am and within 5km of our homes!

Thank goodness for Hive and the buzz going on here with exciting challenges like this weekly meetup of the guys from Food Fight Friday!

I've been trying to think of what to bring you this week as I've been cooking and baking and decided to bring you a Mixed Grill, real budget but delicious dishes made with basic pantry staples.

The smell of Artisan Bread baking fills the house early mornings; one positive coming from lockdown - crusty on the outside but soft and spongy inside, full of sunflower seeds and Wheat bran for added fibre.
All floury, nicely risen and ready to be popped into the oven. (Must say I still prefer making bread the old fashioned way than using the bread machine!)

Heavenly smell of freshly baked bread.

Next up we'll have a quick breakfast Egg in a hole; think I've served it before but this one tasted much better with the artisan bread!

And then I made Phutu especially for those who'd like to try a traditional South African dish; a crumbly maize meal porridge similar to polenta; delicious served with a basil, tomato and onion sauce.

Next up will be a couple of puddings/ desserts; we all need a whole lot of sweetening in our lives at the moment not so, and we'll start off with a helping of a deliciously creamy old fashioned Bread & Butter pudding dotted with homemade Apricot Jam, just like Grandma made; crispy little bits sticking out the top.

Then one of my mom's favourite ways of stretching a fruit salad with 5 children to feed, was to set the sliced fruit in a fruity jelly - funny how the apples and bananas do not discolour when set in jelly like this, really yummy!

And the very last one, a humble quick and easy Cookies & Custard Fruity pud anyone can throw together in a jiffy - simply layer your favourite broken cookies with bananas and custard and top it with a sprinkling of coconut and you're all done!

Hope you enjoyed this mixed grill, please let me know what you would have chosen to have for our Food Fight Friday party this week?
