Homemade Peach Jam

Hi fellow Foodies,

The other day I spent some time turning some peaches from our CSA into some jam!

Homemade Peach Jam

One of the things I've been trying to do is try my best to not waste whatever we can and preserve it. This doesn't always work the best but in many ways it ends up doing okay. This one is some homemade peach jam! I don't really know the difference between jams, jellies and preserves so if I got the name wrong, let me know lol. It appears to be more of a jam than something else, I guess?

Unfortunately I lost the website that I used to get the recipe from but it was incredibly simple! All you need to do is cut the peaches, put them in a big pot with 4 cups of sugar and 4 tablespoons of lemon juice and you have your jam after it boils down for a while!

Once the peaches were cut it was time to add the sugar in. I wasn’t sure how this was going to go since there didn’t appear to be much liquid in the recipe but it turned out great!

Some are against using this type of lemon juice but you do what you have to do sometimes lol. I used it and I think it came out great!

The peaches are all nice and mixed around. We haven’t had wooden spoons in our house for a long time for whatever reason but I bought a couple recently and love them. I enjoy cooking this type of stuff with a wooden spoon more than I do with other things. Nostalgia maybe? I don’t know.

I was surprised how quickly the peaches let go of their liquid and really turned into some good stuff! It turns out there was plenty of liquidity in the ingredients so that was relieving. One of the specifics of the recipe that I remember was them saying that you had to take the bubbles off the top when it started to happen. This made the jam look a lot clearer in the jars when you went to can it so I took care of that. I hope I didn’t take too much of it off since when I tried it after the stuff cooled off, there was some good flavor in that foam.

Now that that stuff was cooking it was time to boil my jars! I knew I wanted to can this stuff since we don’t eat jams and all that too often so it was better to make it and can it instead of letting it go bad. Got the big stock pot out and gave it a boil with the jars and lids!

Some feedback from this and other recipes is that some don’t give it a boiling water bath because of the temperature of the stuff when you cook it. I err on the side of caution though so I gave it a nice boiling water bath for 15 minutes to give it a good sterilization and seal!

The jars came out great I think. The stuff wasn’t cloudy since I took the foam off it which was good to see. I also had exactly enough for 6 of the little jars! I was excited that I didn’t have any left over or didn’t boil too many jars. I got lucky with that one.

It was a fun recipe to do! I enjoyed getting all the stuff together and making it, I don’t make this type of food often so it was a good experience for me. The best part about it was that I got to give all of the jars I made to some of my closest coworkers I had worked with for many years, on my last day as a thank you and parting gift! The 6 jars I made was the exact number I needed so I was glad about that!
