Solar eclipse this week also conjunct Mercury retrograde for a triple alignment

The solar eclipse on Thursday 10 June 2021 at 10h52 GMT (11h52 London daylight savings time; 06h52 NY; 20h52 Sydney) coincides with Mercury conjunct and transiting the Sun. This makes for a triple alignment of Sun, Moon and Mercury all aligned with the earth, which is a particularly rare event. Eclipses occur every year, as do the Mercury transit of the Sun, which occurs several times a year. However, for them to both occur on the same day is extremely rare and this will add to the powerful influence to be experienced in the coming 36 hours, as I write this.

Eclipse visibility
The solar eclipse will only be visible to those in the far north of the planet, namely north-eastern Canada, Greenland (Hi to all the readers in Greenland lol), the North Pole and Russia’s far east. So probably none of us will see it unless you’re in Canada. The only ones to see it may be those troops going to war as Russia prepares to attack USA up there in the Arctic circle, if rumors of war are to be believed.

Western Tropical versus Vedic Siderial astrology
Serious jokes aside though, the alignment occurs in the western Tropical zodiac at 19 degrees Gemini. The Mercury transit of the sun is less than one degree away from that exact point, which is still actually in late Taurus constellation according to the literal Siderial, Vedic and astronomical observable positioning.

This new moon solar eclipse is traditionally a powerful time and when we add to it the Mercury retrograde conjunction and transit of the sun, then we have a double impact of note. Solar eclipses are traditionally said to be bad omens for the leader of whichever nations see them. The sun symbolizes the ruler of the nation. This might suggest a concern for President Putin of Russia and perhaps Prime minister Trudeau of Canada, although the shadow only brushes a small part of their respective nations.

Fixed stars and Medieval astrology
This solar eclipse is also influenced by fixed stars with which it aligns. In Medieval astrology the alchemists back then would also place great importance on the fixed stars situated in the backdrop of the constellations. Modern astrologers know little of this unless they have really researched astrological history. Now the fixed stars in this eclipse alignment portend recklessness, self-confidence, belligerence and treachery according to Medieval lore, so military engagement now would be possible.

Eclipse duration and influence
In fact eclipses last only a few minutes or hours at most but the effect is said to last for up to six months thereafter, so caution and honesty is recommended for the rest of the year, especially for those nations mentioned in the far north. With the moon slightly further away from the earth right now, it will appear smaller than the sun and thus allow a slight ring of sunlight to be visible around it at the time of eclipse, which could look impressive.

Solar eclipses are generally times of invigorating new birth in ideas or chapters of life. Western astrologers will note that not only is the new moon eclipse in Gemini, but it is also conjunct the ruler of Gemini, namely Mercury. Vedic astrologers will correctly remind us that the eclipse is actually literally occurring in the constellation of Taurus, right in the center of the bull’s horns at the end of the Taurus constellation.

Mercury’s influence on this eclipse
Nevertheless, the addition of the planet Mercury, now in retrograde, to the new moon alignment, suggests that a Mercurial influence will be felt, namely one of added bright ideas, communication and travel. I would caution readers to avoid recklessness, over-confidence, rushed thinking, belligerence and deception during this week. We are also vulnerable to earthquakes and storms now as the gravity of the multiple heavenly bodies aligns on the day itself.

The eclipse, falling at 19 degrees of Gemini in the western tropical zodiac, may effect you personally in a more noticeable way if you have any of your major planets of your horoscope situated there, or in the opposite position in Sagittarius, for example.

Mercury retrograde conjunct sun
With Mercury conjunct the Sun/Moon eclipse, it may be time for the winged messenger to play his tricks, make some jokes, and pass on some valuable information now. The actual exact conjunction of Mercury to the Sun occurs just over 12 hours after the eclipse, at 01h13 GMT on 11 June. During its retrograde period, Mercury has an “inferior conjunction” with the sun, implying that Mercury passes within the sun’s orbit directly between earth and the sun, as opposed to the “superior conjunction” which occurs when mercury is direct or moving forward and is then seen to pass by the outer side of the sun, from earth’s perspective.

I have written about this Mercury “cazimi” or conjunction of the sun in previous blog posts here and here. This is the few hours when Mercury is “in the heart of the sun” or at the exact conjunction, lasting for about half of a degree of arc. This will occur for a few hours leading up to and a few hours after the exact conjunction at 01h13 GMT on 11 June. It’s period of magic, genius and opportunity to perform any ceremonies or rituals to tap in to your inner muse and guide, as Mercury the “psychopomp” or guide of the departing souls is sometimes known.

I am usually asleep at this time in the night here in sunny South Africa, but I may set an internal alarm to wake myself up and capture the moment. Or I may invoke a lucid dream at the time of "cazimi", since the dream realm is the best place to meet the inner guide. Usually I compose a poem in honor of Mercury the winged messenger of the gods, known by many names in various cultures, like Thoth, Hermes, Odin and others.
