Condo Garden Journal: Bountiful Harvest

Hi fellow Gardeners,

The other day we did some harvesting ahead of a potential storm but also because things were quite big!

Bountiful Harvest

One of the best things about the little garden we have going on the deck at our condo is that we've been able to harvest things in various quantities for the past couple weeks. It really got a lot better this time though, we got a great harvest!

To start though, a harvest of a garden wouldn't be complete without some losses. This one was the most unfortunate! This was our biggest tomato by far, one that you would expect to see at a farmers market or farm store! This thing was huge! The little man noticed it and was excited so he picked it. He brought it over and that's when we got upset that it was being snacked upon by this caterpillar here! Man that was a tough thing to see lol.

This thing was a giant tomato! Made me sad to throw it in compost. I know we could have certainly salvaged the tomato and cut off a big chunk of the area where it was eating but I don't know about that, I'm not that desperate to eat them lol.

Wanted to add in the Marigolds are really doing well here! We have been enjoying the marigolds protection they offer the lettuce and other plants around it from aphids. The lettuce behind them was thankfully largely protected!

All in all, here was our harvest!

I was really glad to have a bunch of lettuce to harvest. Lettuce is something we will grow on our own next year when we make some adjustments to what we plant. One of the things that we will do is make sure that we space out the plants better next year. There were things that were jam packed into pots so they didn't grow as well as they could have if they were in single pots.

Our tomato plants were really great! We got a bunch of different size tomatoes from them. The ones in the cups are Roma tomatoes, although they are quite a bit smaller than the ones you see at the grocery store which is fine, they taste great! The other tomatoes are a different breed we aren't familiar with, "patio tomatoes" variety. They look good and they also taste good so that was pretty nice.

The cucumbers were one of the ones that have been growing the best lately. The thing that comes with learning over time is that the variety we got here taste gross! LOL. They have a lot of big seeds in them so maybe they will be decent for pickling but picking them and eating them doesn't taste too good. We will end up planting a different variety next year so hopefully we can get that squared away. One of the farms near us has the most unbelievably delicious cucumbers that I've ever had! I don't know what kind they grow or buy but those are the ones that we will be planting next year for sure.

The scallions here weren't something I expected. I thought they were actual onions but turns out they are scallions. Love the taste of either of them so wasn't at all upset about that!

As the season winds down, we are starting to pick a lot more of the stuff so that we can use it up before it goes bad. It's been very fun and nice for the little man and I to go out to the deck and grab some healthy snacks when we want!
