Semillas de Manaca.jpg

Hello everyone, welcome once again to my little corner of #hive, I hope your week is starting full of magic, love and gratitude, for me I can say that it's just Monday and everything looks great.

Yesterday I was gathered with my family in a planned meeting to pray for the souls of my grandparents who transcended and I could not help but think that life takes many unexpected turns in just seconds, we never know how much time we have left on this plane and day by day I have been able to become aware that living is an experience of perception, things happen and that is the most important thing they happen, no matter what or who, we are in this world where everything is finite in this case that we wear as skin, so we must take care of what is important, our physical, mental and emotional health. I have simply begun to resume my daily exercise routine, I work on several projects that nourish me and generate excitement, I have been leaving some eating habits that do not do me good and I have been acquiring some others that give me health and vitality, that is why today I am motivated to write about a fruit that I rediscovered on my last trip to Amazonas and which I am now number one fan thanks to the benefits it has given me to consume it, I hope it is of your interest.

Manaca

image.png

As I said before I have been germinating some projects, one of those has led me to research about Amazonian fruits, their properties and exotic flavors, how many are a super food, among other characteristics that make them unique and desired by many. The manaca was the first thing I found in the native market the first day I went, it was in season, it is supposed to be a winter fruit. I had tried it before and personally I really disliked its taste, I didn't want to try it again but since it was in season and it was everywhere I wanted to give it a try, thank God it was because I found out that the first time I tried it they had offered it to me damaged hahaha.

image.png

The flavor I remembered was from a juice I had been given and it was expired. Manaca is a highly perishable fruit so having it under the Amazon climate without refrigeration makes it go bad very fast, Curious isn't it?

This second taste activated a small addiction in me, I began the investigation, I made notes of the properties that I was told had this purple seed and of course I bought, bought and bought again to freeze and take back to Caracas; a taste with mañoco and my life changed, what a great sensation to taste this drink, "its flavor is not comparable to anything I have tasted before" and speaking of Amazonian fruits you have to know that it is a phrase that I will use a lot because everything I have had the opportunity to try thanks to my Wóttüja family has made my taste buds explode with pleasure, they are unique flavors that are only found in the jungle and that in most cases are products that are only available there because they can not be preserved for a long time.

Wottüjja: "It means Man of knowledge" and is the ancestral culture of the Piaroas Indigenous of the Venezuelan Amazon.

"Açai" a legend behind his name

image.png

Manaca is the local name for this fruit in Amazonas, Venezuela. Açai has become known in the world thanks to the export of this product to Brazil, its most popular name also comes from the native Brazilian tribes, it is a word of the Tupi culture that means "fruit that cries" and was given in honor of the daughter of a shaman who, according to legend, seeing that his tribe was perishing for lack of food, ordered that all newborn children be sacrificed to keep the number of the population under control until they could get other sources of food that could sustain them. He made no exceptions even though his daughter had given birth to a sweet baby girl who was also sacrificed, the devastated mother cried and begged God for her people so that they would no longer suffer from hunger and one day being in the jungle she saw her daughter sitting at the foot of a palm tree, when she saw her she ran desperately with her arms outstretched towards her but the girl just disappeared leaving her disconsolate crying hugging the tree, The next day the men of the tribe found the dead woman hugging the palm tree with her serene face looking up towards the fruit that was in the tree, the men climbed up and collected the dark colored seeds and prepared a drink that the shaman saw as a blessing, consequently he called the fruit açai which was the name of his daughter backwards, he lifted the previous order to sacrifice the children and his tribe never went hungry again.

Superfood

The manaca must be processed within 24 hours of being harvested and is not used until after it is cooked a little to extract all its oils and properties. In the community they heat the water a little until they can no longer submerge the hand and remove it from the fire, then it goes through a process of crushed so to speak, for this reason it is only exported as frozen pulp, oil or powder being dried before.

It contains vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, C and E, fatty acids such as Omega 3, 6 and 9, more than 16 amino acids, minerals such as zinc, magnesium, iron, potassium and calcium in addition to being rich in carbohydrates and fiber so this seed has multiple health benefits among which we can find that:

  • It provides a great source of energy due to its high vitamin and protein content.;

  • Helps the immune system thanks to the amount of antioxidants and fiber it contains.;

  • Regulates the functions of the digestive tract;

  • It is a natural diuretic;

  • Lowers cholesterol levels;

  • Improves heart health;

  • Strengthens the nervous system;

  • Properties that help to rejuvenate the skin as well as anti-cancer properties.

To learn more about this seed you can look for some scientific studies, here is some more information that I found while researching.

Açai seeds Juice

image.png

I confess that being the first time I bought manaca I had to go accompanied by one of the grandfather's daughters who helped me select the best seeds and curiously we found that the best were collected by native Piaroas, we bought 2 kg to prepare a juice for everyone and we went to the churuata. When we arrived one of the girls was ready to teach me how to prepare this drink and I just stood behind the camera.😅

It began by washing them and put them in a pit with water, they should not be heated too much because they are damaged then go dipping your hand in the water until it starts to get too warm to keep it submerged, that is the indication that should be removed from the fire and it is time to start crushing to extract the pulp. It takes quite a while to do this because they are hitting it with the mallet of a pestle until the seed is completely naked.

Add water and strain as the seeds are releasing all that is left before reaching the bone and Voila, ready, just serve it and drink it.

Semillas de Manaca (3).jpg

Particularly most of the people in the area like to drink the juice without sweetening it, so the most I've seen is that they add mañoco and it is also found in the town where they sell it in little glasses already prepared.

Semillas de Manaca (5).jpg

We ate and shared a delicious manaca juice with mañoco and at the same time we were enjoying the benefits of this amazing fruit, I preferred it a little sweeter and the times I have prepared it at home I have added some sweetener, but well I don't blame myself for that hahaha.

That's all for today, I really hope you liked it and I wish you could enjoy the experience of drinking this magical beverage, I send you the best vibes in the world. Adiwa!

  • Nos aporta una gran fuente de energía debido a su gran contenido de vitaminas y proteínas;

  • Ayuda al sistema inmune gracias a la cantidad de antioxidantes y fibras que contiene;

  • Regula las funciones del tracto digestivo;

  • Es un diurético natural;

  • Disminuye los niveles de colesterol;

  • Mejora la salud del corazón;

  • Fortalece el sistema nervioso;

Adiwa!
