I imagine we all have specific things that have deep meaning in our lives. Often, these are the things that end up being fond memories.
My favorite symbol of summer!
Like many kids, I loved summer, and like many of my friends part of that love steemed from the fact that we were out of school! I was never very fond of going to school, so getting that long summer reprieve was always welcome.
But what did summer really mean? What were the particular things that defined — and continue to define — this season for me?
What hides here?
Strawberries!
More than anything else I can think of, fresh strawberries from the garden meant summer!
When I was a kid, we always had pretty large vegetable gardens where we lived, and the most significant thing for me was strawberry season. There was nothing better than sweet, sunwarmed strawberries, straight from the bush!
In Denmark, strawberry season seemed to coincide almost exactly with school holidays (Mid- to late June) and would generally last until the end of July... by which time there would only be a handful of berries becoming ripe, now and then.
Breakfast!
Going Without...
For many years, I lived in Central Texas and thought we tried to grow strawberries, it was not a success because the extended months of 100+ degree (40 degrees C) days seemed to all but wipe out the plants... at least where we were.
In time, I gave up on trying to grow strawberries and instead enjoyed success with a great many varieties of peppers and gourds.
We still have blooms happening!
Finally...
Somehow, the circle was finally "completed" this year!
Although we have had a garden for a long time here in Western Washington, it wasn't till this spring we finally put in some strawberry plants. You might wonder why we didn't plant some sooner... and the simplest reason is space; we keep expanding our growing space every year.
Of course, "first years" don't always bear a lot of fruit, but we have enjoyed quite a nice trickle of lovely fresh berries. And it reminds me how certain things really do mean something to us... summer feels like summer, once again!
Fresh from the vine!
Next year, we'll undoubtedly increase the size of the strawberry patch from the numerous runners these plants are putting out... looking forward to that!
Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!
