[ENG/ESP] Limits.

Portada límites (1).png

We encounter limits from the moment we arrive in this world, as for example, the physical, mental, and emotional human capacity has and are limited; the planet in which we live has limits; the society in which we are immersed has extensive laws; and so on. We have a whole imagination. However, today I want to talk about those limits that are found in the coexistence with the other (see, other people), limits that allow you to live in peace, and the limiting beliefs that do not allow you to do so.

Boundaries can be very useful, that's why they are there, they protect us from things, situations, or people. There are also limits that do not make sense, for example, fear of the judgment of others ("what will they say"), fear of failure...

You must have limits for safety, not out of fear. Otherwise, how will you enjoy being alive?

In my case, I am limited by time (a scientific discovery that became a social pressure and a lot of existential doubts). In addition, I am afraid of disappointing my parents and other loved ones. I am afraid of getting sick. I am afraid of cockroaches and spiders.

Recognition is the first part. Those are limiting beliefs, and each of them are valid but meaningless, they will lead you to put more barriers in your life so that situations will never touch those boundaries you cling to so tightly. But, if you recognize what they are, you will stop putting up barriers, you will start little by little, to remove the ones you have already put up until you are able to disappear that limit that does not make you grow.

For example, the fear of disappointing your parents. If you are a young adult and you have this fear, maybe you study or work something you do not like, only by recommendation (or obligation). Maybe you don't dare to leave the family home and become independent. Maybe you are giving your whole life to a university career to get good grades and show your parents your effort in a role that, by the way, is not you. If they are good parents, they will know you and trust that you can do anything you set your mind to and they will know when you are working hard and when you are not, without the help of an institutional paper. If they are not if they don't know, respect and prioritize yourself first, get them out of your life for a moment, and do what you want to do. Dare to jump boundaries and set limits.

Atrévete a saltar límites y poner límites.

Limits that become support.

What limits do you put on what you don't like?

Learning to say no takes a long time, especially if you were raised to be a girl and later, an obedient woman. But doing it, saying "no" to what you don't want to do, will fill you with things you do want to do, will make you understand or find your way and you won't be so lost anymore.

My personal story with not setting limits is here, but in summary: I am very loved in my home because I try to help as much as I can to my loved ones. I am "that helping hand." However, I realized that by always lending my help, I was consumed by it, which led to not concentrating on what was really important to me: my work and studies. Saying "no" was a revelation, of course, there were no immediate effects, they still forced me to help out of desperation or out of respect for the elders, however, they understood that for some things, they could not count on me... And now, I have more time to work, study and have my free time... I feel that I have grown a lot, and I am not the same as I was two months ago; the results have been fantastic.

It's hard to put limits on something you don't like when society tells you that you have to do that to live in peace with others. For example, when you are a man who likes men and you have to marry a woman to be at peace with your family or with your God.

Life is too short to be unhappy. Set limits to what you don't like, and those limits will be your support to jump over the barriers that don't let you be.

How do you learn to set boundaries?

Learn to connect with your feelings.

¿Cómo aprender a poner límites?

Aprende a conectarte con tus sentimientos.

Tezza_2021_09_14_225709971.jpg

First of all, you must be connected with your feelings... Feelings never fail, on the other hand, thoughts can be a bit false especially if you can't master your mind yet.

I'll leave you with practice, one of the many ways you can connect with your feelings:

Stand in a place to cry or breathe, touch your chest, and detect what you feel when you think about what you don't like. Fear, frustration, anger, may come up. Think about what you want, without greed, but feel the love, the emotion, the tranquility. May you feel it all in your chest, in the tingling of your hands, or wherever the emotion manifests in your body. Then, as you are connected to your feelings, ask yourself, what do I want for my life? What do I have to say, what do I have to do, to start on the right path? Answer with your feelings, they are sincere, and if you use them correctly they can help you see clearly.

This is called being conscious. And a conscious person is one who knows how to set limits.
