[ESP-ENG] Crónicas de una introvertida. // Chronicles of an introverted girl

For a few months now I have been working a lot on self-knowledge, reading some psychology articles and researching a bit on the internet about this whole issue of self-esteem, self-love, personal growth, emotional intelligence, etc. because I think it is something we all should do to be in balance with ourselves, to achieve greater independence and work on many things that maybe we were not doing in the best way. Well, today I thought I would share with you my experience as an introvert, how I function, the challenges I usually face and the advantages of this personality trait.

If you read this and you are an introvert, maybe you can feel identified in some things, however, all people are different according to the experiences we live and our way of seeing the world, therefore this does not define all people of this type.

From a very young age I was a very quiet child, I didn't like to get into trouble in kindergarten so I avoided causing trouble, I didn't yell, I didn't bother my classmates and I always did what I was told to do. I learned to read when I was 4 years old so I liked to take storybooks and sit at recess and read a few lines, I remember how annoying it was to see other kids throwing tantrums or disrupting the class.

When I turned 6 years old I moved to a new city with my family, we moved to a more tropical environment, whose breeze always smelled like the beach and where I knew no one, not even the few relatives who lived in this new city.

I think it was at this stage where I started to draw and to take drawing as a hobby, an activity that like reading caused me a lot of relaxation and I enjoyed hours to dedicate myself to it. I had some friends in the area but after two days in a row that they invited me to play I felt overwhelmed and I preferred to be in the quiet of my house playing alone with my Barbies.

The last years of school were a bit challenging for me in terms of making friends, I had some insecurities which made me go unnoticed many times and I didn't like to socialize much with kids from other classrooms, I was content with my group of three friends. Teamwork was not my thing either, although I used to be quiet, I have a rather heavy character when it comes to teamwork: everything was done my way, otherwise I felt that things would not work out in the best way. I don't think it's relevant to expand on the insecurities I had at school, so I'll summarize things from here.

After moving on to high school I started going out a bit more with my friends without my mom's company -which made me feel great HAHAHAJ- but I realized that even though I was with people I trusted, that I had known for a long time, there were times where I got lost in their conversations, it was like I got exhausted talking to people, but very contradictorily I wanted to appear to have many friends and meet as many people as my friends did so I forced myself to go on outings with them, because I thought that was the common thing to do and meeting people was the most interesting thing in the world.

Nowadays I know myself better and I know that big crowds and noise are not my thing, I'm very laid back so I hardly go out except for some weekends with friends or my boyfriend, and I'm fine with that; I still enjoy reading, I spend my time drawing and I do the things I like, I don't force myself into situations where I know I wouldn't feel comfortable just to fit in.

One of the advantages of being an introvert is often your creative capacity, your patience and your taste for tranquility. These factors made me be constant in drawing, which over time I improved on my own and then my parents enrolled me in several courses where I perfected my techniques and discovered that art is my passion.

I am also very selective when it comes to making friends and even when it comes to relationships, which at the same time represented a difficulty at the beginning of my adolescence in terms of relating to people, as I mentioned above. Many people saw me as someone very shy and reserved, someone who did not bring much to a trivial conversation, and, at some point this meant an insecurity in me since I knew that being in confidence I could be fun, creative, and a very loyal friend....

Something I never felt comfortable with is that in society it's practically written that if you're not a social person and always being noticed, then who are you? On many occasions when surrounded by a group of people they have stood in front of me and asked me in a very unkind or empathetic way why I wasn't speaking, and "encouraged" me to say something. God, these types of situations for me were super uncomfortable, why did they have to force me to participate? If you are a person who is not a talkative person, being forced to do so is not going to help you be one at all, it's counterproductive.

I am a quiet and often reserved person, but that doesn't make me antisocial, I like to go out, go to the beach, be with my friends and occasionally meet people, but I also know how to enjoy time with myself, I have almost never been bored by not being surrounded by people. I'm not shy either, well... not at all, in general I'm quite friendly, but I think that if the conversation is very banal or I don't understand what they're talking about, I can't even think of a bad joke to participate in. This kind of stereotypes are usually associated with introverted people but as you see, it is not so, these characteristics vary from one person to another.

Whether you are extroverted or introverted is all in the way we respond to stimuli (something I read in this link). Introverts need very little stimuli to feel energized and motivated, while extroverts need much more. But, although both personalities seem to be very different, I have the evidence that they complement each other perfectly: an example of this is my boyfriend. Ironically I never thought to be with someone with a personality so opposite to mine, he is very social and active, he gets into trust very fast with people and doesn't mind being the focus of attention, but they say that opposites attract so in the end it happened, we complement each other very well and we have learned a lot from each other along the way.

Anyway, it's okay if you're introverted, it's okay if you're extroverted, and it's okay if you have a little bit of both. Know yourself and work on those things you would like to improve, for my part I have decided to try to relax more when surrounded by people and be a little more spontaneous, without losing my essence or appearing something I'm not.

Take care, we'll read each other.😄
