El costo de una bocanada de aire | The cost of a breath of air [ESP/ENG]

PORTADA.jpg

I recently wrote a short article about beauty, it is the kind of text that I always find pleasant, it connects me with the good things we have, and in the end it is edifying for everyone.

But someone has said, and rightly so, that we can appreciate the beautiful because somewhere lies its opposite, ugliness, otherwise we could not have criteria to distinguish one thing from the other.

In these days life has been determined to show me these two faces, I have seen the solidarity of friends, the accompaniment in the face of adversity, and also the indifference and exploitation in the face of the evil of others. I have witnessed first hand the vicissitudes that a patient with covid-19 goes through in our country.

We say that our relative had covid-19 because it is the medical conclusion according to a certain clinical assessment, because scientific verification by means of the respective test is not available to everyone. In our case the only option to perform the test was to pay a considerable amount of money in a private clinic, which was much more useful to pay for the drugs. These, by the way, are unaffordable unless you have a significant amount of dollars.

Our patient became complicated and the administration of oxygen was indispensable. The public services are currently collapsed, very few have oxygen supply. The doctors themselves recommended that, if possible, it should be done at home.

Renting an oxygen cylinder nowadays, at least in my city, Maracay, is really complicated, you have to wait for someone to vacate one. Then there is the matter of costs, in our case we managed to rent for $160 per week. In a short time we had already rented four cylinders, because according to what we were told the filling stations were also collapsed, so instead of filling them as usual, we only had to look for more cylinders to rent.

In all this, one is always left with the feeling of not knowing whether the information one receives is true or false. Because the pandemic has served to feed one of the worst plagues of the human soul, greed. There are many people doing good business at the expense of the suffering of others.

Although everything possible was done, our patient died and at that moment we could feel the weight of indifference and indolence. The death certificate we received nowhere attributed covid-19 as the cause of death. Even so, to our surprise, all the funeral homes told us that only one was authorized to transfer bodies to the crematorium, located in the city of San Joaquin, in the neighboring state of Carabobo.

As can be imagined, since there is a monopoly for this activity, one is condemned to pay the cost they decide for the management. I do not know if there are any epidemiological criteria to establish this monopoly or if unscrupulous people are simply operating out of a sense of opportunity.

Some of my neighbors who have gone through a similar ordeal before have told me, with deep sadness, that it is common practice to give false information at the time of hospitalization of a patient with covid-19. This is in anticipation that the patient may die, so that they cannot be located to take responsibility for the corpse. A terrible situation that occurs when it is absolutely impossible to afford a cremation with the existing monopolistic service. People are then resigned to leave the body abandoned at the health center for the authorities to dispose of it.

I am writing this article for several reasons. On the one hand, to put on record what is happening to us in these times of tragedy. I am one of those who believe that it is necessary to nurture the historical memory, the knowledge of the history lived is one of the possibilities we have to avoid making the same mistakes in the future, although, of course, that is no guarantee.

I am also encouraged to write to call attention. Some people still think that covid-19 is something that is not serious. Well, no, it is not, the pandemic is a reality, the disease can be serious and people die from it every day.

If we do not give it due importance and we underestimate it, we do not internalize the responsibility that each one of us has to protect ourselves in order to protect others.

In countries like ours, where the authorities are inefficient, unscrupulous, and where we have precarious health systems, the only possibility we have to take care of ourselves is prevention, to become aware that no one is safe, and if we all do our part and manage to lower the number of infected people, there will be more opportunity to attend to those who become complicated. We can all help in this sense, protecting ourselves is also a sign of solidarity.

We cannot get used to what we are experiencing as a consequence of the irresponsibility of a few. Under no circumstances should we see it as normal. It is a complete abomination that someone has to die asphyxiated for not having the necessary dollars to pay for a breath of oxygen. It is a disgrace to our human condition that people cannot honor the bodies of their deceased because they do not have the resources necessary for a burial or cremation. None of this can ever be normal...

Thank you for your time.
