On many occasions in one movie or another I lived with amazement the fear of the fictional characters of catching a virus, becoming zombies or simply living in fear of dying. It seemed so alien to today's world, so improbable even though diseases such as Ebola or HIV had posed a real threat to our species, we had never been so threatened by a virus as we are now.
Pandemics galore and worse, but today's world is one that is more connected. A few centuries ago it was unthinkable that a disease could spread so fast. Plagues advanced slowly, leaving death and desolation in their wake.
The Covid-19 pandemic has sown fear in the midst of an uncertain future, in which we are learning of new discoveries every day, something normal in this type of unprecedented situation. However, this time we have not had to wait so many years for the vaccines to be created, but the rich countries have kept most of the doses, so that millions of people in the world do not have access to them.

En muchas ocasiones en una que otra película viví con estupor el miedo de los personajes ficticios a contagiarse de algún virus, volverse zombis o simplemente vivir con el miedo de morir. Parecía tan ajeno al mundo actual, tan improbable a pesar de que enfermedades como el Ebola o el VIH habían supuesto una amenaza real para nuestra especie, nunca habíamos estado tan amenazados por un virus como lo estamos en este momento.
Pandemias muchas y peores, pero el mundo de hoy es uno que está más conectado. Hace unos siglos era impensable que una enfermedad se expandiera tan rápido. Las pestes avanzaban lentamente dejando muerte y desolación a su paso.
La Pandemia por Covid-19 ha sembrado el miedo en medio de un futuro incierto, en el que nos vamos enterando de nuevos descubrimientos cada día, algo normal en este tipo de situaciones inéditas. Sin embargo en esta oportunidad no hemos tenido que esperar tantos años para que las vacunas fueran creadas, pero los países ricos se han quedado con la mayor parte de las dosis, haciendo que millones de personas en el mundo no tengan acceso a ellas.
In my country Venezuela I am not even close to getting vaccinated, nobody talks about a massive vaccination campaign, let alone report the actual death rates in the country. The country is in the middle of an unprecedented crisis in Americalatina so few vaccines have been purchased, only a few privileged people from the elites that govern us, high government officials and part of the public medical staff have had access to these doses.
So I, like millions of Venezuelans, have to live with the anxiety of knowing that we may never receive a vaccine or worse, that perhaps when the vaccines arrive, many people will probably have died and it will already be too late. Although a vaccine does not guarantee health, it is better to have the protection of having one.
Maybe someday we will be able to discover a cure for this disease, but if not we will have to make do with taking care not to get sick, as if we were living in a medieval pandemic or in one of those movies where at the end many of your loved ones fall victim to the disease.
I have witnessed the ravages of this disease firsthand, I have known of entire families in which more than 5 members have died, I have seen how many people dismiss the possible risk of getting sick and dying suddenly. We are all going to die at some point, that is the natural order of things, but we should also all have access to universal health care and not die because of failures in the public health care system.
En mi país Venezuela ni siquiera estoy cerca de vacunarme, nadie habla acerca de una campaña de vacunación masiva, ni mucho menos reportan las tasas reales de muertes en el país. El país está en medio de una crisis sin precedentes en Americalatina por lo que se han comprado pocas vacunas, solo han tenido acceso a estas dosis algunos privilegiados de las elites que nos gobiernan, los altos cargos gubernamentales y parte del personal médico público.
Así que yo, como millones de Venezolanos tenemos que vivir con la ansiedad de saber que quizás nunca recibamos una vacuna o peor aún que quizás cuando lleguen las vacunas probablemente hayan muerto muchas personas y ya sea demasiado tarde. Aunque una vacuna no garantiza la salud, es mejor contar con la protección de tenerla.
Quizás algún día podamos descubrir una cura para esta enfermedad, sino es así tendremos que conformarnos con cuidarnos de no enfermar, como si estuviéramos viviendo una pandemia medieval o en una de esas películas donde al final muchos de tus seres más queridos caen víctima de la enfermedad.
He sido testigo de los estragos de esta enfermedad en primera persona, he sabido de familias enteras en los que han muerto más de 5 miembros, he visto como muchas personas desestiman el posible riesgo a enfermar y a morir súbitamente. Todos vamos a morir en algún momento, así es el orden natural de las cosas, pero también todos deberíamos tener acceso a una salud universal y no morir por los fallos en el sistema de salud pública.
Maybe I will never get a dose of any of the dozens of vaccines on the market, it does not matter, my biggest concern is my parents and my grandmothers, I would love to extend their years and have quality of life but I understand that I do not have control over many things, although it is impossible not to worry. There are those who say that for those who are alive there will always be worries, but covid-19 is not a circumstantial one.
I hope we get out of this crisis and learn enough for similar situations in the future, maybe we will be like the protagonists of those apocalyptic movies and we will be counted among the survivors.
Quizás nunca llegue a obtener una dosis de alguna de las decenas de vacunas presentes en el mercado, no importa, mi mayor preocupación son mis padres y mis abuelitas, me encantaría alargar sus años y que tengan calidad de vida pero entiendo que no tengo el control sobre muchas cosas, aunque es imposible no preocuparse. Hay quienes dicen que para el que está vivo siempre habran preocupaciones, pero el covid-19 no es una circunstancial.
Espero que salgamos de esta crisis y que aprendamos lo suficiente para situaciones similares en el futuro, quizás seamos como los protagonistas de esas películas apocalípticas y seamos contados entre los sobrevivientes.
