The ill-effects of inactivity

Inactivity costs and the price of this are very high. Inactivity increases misery and decreases happiness.

Oh, inactivity causes an innumerable number of ill-health problems. From all these statements here, it’s clear how serious is the problem of inactivity!

Let’s see how serious this problem is and what the ill effects of inactivity are.

Change is life. Stagnation is death. If you don’t change, you die. It’s that simple. It’s that scary.-Leonard Sweet

But I say life is movement, and stagnation is death. I guess every physical educationist has said these wise words, but who cares?

Physical activity may be any activity, ranging from going to the market to fetch vegetables by walk to sweating on the treadmill. You can do it even in your office, doing jobs like fetching a file from the filing cabinet, avoiding pressing the call bell, and asking the office attendant to fetch the file. All these jobs contribute to a lot of activity.

Why then does the inactivity take place?

Technological development is the culprit. Today, man can get everything within the reach of his hand. He can do or get whatever he wants in a jiffy. Sedentary jobs increased alarmingly, turning the man into a robot. The ill effects of inaction are omnipresent. I’ll-effects of inaction on health is not an exception.

Inaction is nothing but inertia. When you are expected not to sit in front of the TV for hours on end, the ill effects are bound to show up in the form of an innumerable number of ailments.

Let’s see this issue in a detailed manner

Owing to physical inactivity, at least 10% of deaths are taking place all over the world. And the general opinion is that inactivity is as disastrous as smoking and obesity. The journal also suggested that public health officials should treat this condition as a pandemic.

Researchers from various health institutes concluded that the deaths from coronary heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancers are due to physical inactivity, which accounted for more than 5 million deaths all over the world in recent years.

Researchers are of the opinion that if physical inactivity rates were reduced even by 10-20 percent, it could save between a half-million and 1.5 million people from death. Besides that, physical inactivity is the underlying cause of a plethora of diseases.

Inactivity levels vary

Researchers have established that inactivity levels rise with age in most countries. Inactivity levels are 35-40 percent in women and in men, it is 25-30 percent. Similarly, the lowest level is in South-Eastern Asia between 5-10 percent, and the highest level is in Europe at 70 percent or above.

Some are more active than others

Researchers investigated why some people have more activity than others, and the results of their investigations revealed that people with low income suffer from ailments due to inactivity. They diagnosed many households with low income with diabetes, asthma, and obesity. This section of society is more prone to life-threatening ailments because of inactivity.

People from low-income groups are said to be leading sedentary lives. This explains all about the ill effects caused by inactivity. According to the study, the low-income group is less interested in physical activity and the outcomes of that activity than the high-income groups. Overweight people are at an increased risk of premature death.

exercise while others are not that interested. Earlier reports were based on factors related to an individual’s age, sex, and their socio-economic status, etc. And all those earlier reports were conducted on higher-income groups. Subsequently, research has been conducted on low-income groups where understanding of the importance of activity for physical activity is poor.

A top researcher expressed his view that focusing on the factors that contribute to the ill effects of inactivity and developing schemes is of utmost importance. This helps in understanding and seeing the picture from a real perspective. But, once people’s awareness is ignited, nothing stops them from taking proper action.

Obesity plays a significant role

Among the ill effects of inactivity, obesity is the foremost ill effect in death and disability, which is strongly influenced by physical inactivity. Obese individuals are more vulnerable to serious ailments and may lead to even death. They have a 50-100% increased risk of premature death compared to individuals at a healthy weight.

Researchers also found that inactivity levels varied widely across the globe, with the lowest levels in South Asia and the highest levels in Europe and South America. In most countries, inactivity rises with age and is higher in women than in men in a ratio of 7:6.

What works to promote physical activity?

A researcher said that even the simplest and most moderate physical activities have the potential to boost health in a big way. Hence, it is necessary to promote and plan strategies to push the importance of activity and make it a healthy priority.

To promote the concept of activity, researchers explored different ways to spread awareness of the importance of physical activity. In some parts of the world, the advocates of "activity" have found some methods to send their message deep into the hearts of the masses. They tried to spread the importance of activity through electronic and print media because both the media reach the public in a cheaper way.

The messages that reach the common man make them wonder if simple activities like cycling, walking, and jogging would work miracles, and so it is easy to take up physical activity as part of their lives.
