๐Ÿฆ‰ The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)

๐Ÿ“š Dendrocopos Greek: dendron tree, coptล to hit, beat
๐Ÿ“š major (lat.) large

The most common and numerous woodpecker. He is found everywhere, in any forest, and at any time of the year.
However, I still noticed one oddity in their behavior depending on the season.
In summer, autumn and winter, they prefer to stay higher in the trees. And with the arrival of spring, they already descend to the lower tiers of the forest.

In summer, this woodpecker feeds mainly on woody insects, in winter - on nuts, and seeds of conifers.
Especially for this, they hollow out a special hole in the bark of the tree, where they insert the cone. This is called the "smithy".
Below this โ€œsmithyโ€ you can often see heaps of characteristically pecked cones.
