Finally back to SMAP contest! Love this week's theme, branches is where I like to photograph most birds, especially if there is no human influence on sight. This week's theme is Top Branch birds; but to be all inclusive (and since I have good shots on the subject 😁)... I'll add some low branch birds too!
Off we go? Straight to Sri Lanka, where wildlife is all around. And this particular tree, in Udawalawe national Park, had no shortage of top branch birds!
Curious about what species is this? They're big... and from one of my favourite bird families. Here, a closer look:
The trees were full of them! There were other species as well, especially ring necked parakeets, but these guys stole the show. It was the first time I saw the species, and had never seen so many together! Still hard to recognize?
Malabar pied hornbills are one of the two hornbill species you can find in Sri Lanka, and they're easy to tell apart. How cool are these guys??
Also in this country, and on top branches (but in little bushes top branches), the colourful bee eaters were posing for the photos.
Well... some tried to pose for the photos, until the partner came and and rushed him/her to stop slacking and start hunting!
And to not discriminate the little ones in lower branches, let's stay in Asia, but off to Indonesia, to the garden hear the house I satyed in Nusa Lembongan, a small island in Bali.
These bulbuls can be seen in SE Asia, and their tiny crest makes them even cooler! They got pretty close to humans.
To some more top branch birds, back to my home country!
This one was taken in my last vacations, and it's one of the species I first learned to recognize by their singing.
These little guys normally perch in high places, and are loud as hell! They sing a lot, so they're pretty easy to spot, and they are all over the country, even in urban areas. With some (very little) experience, it's easy to recognize their singing.
Also common in the country, but bigger and meaner, are these guys.
Well, not meaner; it's not their fault they are a prey species. And a beautiful one! I rarely see them perched, this one allowed me to get closer and closer...
And then, off he went!
To finish this round... a bird in a low perch! I don't have many photos of this species perched, because I saw them all the time jumping around in the grass. Since I know it's one of the favourites of a good member of this community, it earns a place on this post too! 😉
