Hello feathered friends. Have you ever seen pigeons kissing?
Yesterday was my first time. Luckily, I was in the right place at the right time. And of course, I took some pictures for you.
Look at these two love birds. They are standing on the top of the chimney next to each other. Simply enjoying the sunny day.
At one moment, the female moved to the other side leaving the male watching her. At first, I thought that she will fly away.
But after a second, she turned to the male and kissed him.
After the first kiss, they started to look at each other passionately.
Now the male takes the initiative.
And the kissing continues...
Although it looks like kissing, it simply isn't.
It is called billing and it's a part of the mating ritual. This is when the male and female attach their beaks and throw-up some partially digested seeds in each other's mouths. It usually happens a few times before the mating session, which is pretty straight forward. The female squats, and the male hops on her.
Pigeons are faithful and loving birds, and they mate for life unless they are separated by death or accident.
