After learning that Cardinals prefer to live within a mile of where they were born, I feel like the beautiful red birds who come to eat at the feeder are MY birds! They can live up to 15 years, and although the average age is 3 years, one was known to live for 28 years.
My feeder has been in the backyard for 20 years and is always full of their favorites-black oil sunflower seeds and white milo.
The feeder gets busy in the early morning and late afternoon and evening. Cardinals are always the last birds at the feeder. They do enjoy a bedtime snack!
They do not migrate and can be found year round in southeastern Canada, through the eastern United States and south through Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala.
The brilliant red male is much more colorful than the female.
Cardinals are protected under the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act that makes it illegal 'to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, or sell birds. I wish every country had a similar law and enforced it.
There are the seven states in America that have the northern cardinal as their state bird. My state, Wisconsin, chose the Robin!
