Blue Diamond - the Kingfisher

Kingfishers are one of the most colorful birds here in Austria, and it is a bird that you can see the whole year round because they stay here during winter and summer. But still the best time to watch them is during the breeding season when they have some small birds to feed, because during this time they have a mor frequent hunting activity. They can breed several times a year but usually 2 times in early and late spring. I already found it on several places here in Austria and I see it regulary but the difficulty is to find a place where it sits down for hunting or for a rest to get some nice pictures. Usually you only see them flying by with a lot of speed and during flight they are a bit difficult to photograph.

The Kingfisher usually has several places where it sits down to hunt and if you know one, it is likely that it is coming back, if the place was good for fishing. Of course, you should not disturb it or get too close without camouflage because then it is not coming back and taking a picture of it would be way more difficult. I am always very happy when I see a kingfisher since it is one of the most colurful and beautiful birds. But I am also looking forward visiting a countryl like Costa Rica where I could find a lot of beautiful colorful birds.
