Larry Is Alive 17 April 2024: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for wednesday, the 17th day of April, 2024. It is the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals night day two. English side Arsenal were eliminated from the Champions League after being defeated by Bayern Munich in front of a raucous crowd at Allianz Arena. The match ended Bayern Munich (1-0) Arsenal and (3-2) on agregate.

In the second match of the night, Real Madrid defeated Manchester City on penalties in a thrilling quarterfinal at Etihad Stadium, regaining their grip on the Champions League. The match had ended Manchester City (1-1) Real Madrid and (4-4) on aggregate this leading to penalties with Real Madrid winning 4-3 on penalties.

Larry then veers off to have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from Canada. He finds out that on this day in 1982, the Canada Act, sometimes referred to as the Constitution Act, came into force, establishing a number of individual rights, upholding parliamentary supremacy, and establishing Canada as an independent, sovereign nation.

From Canada, Larry goes to England. He finds out that on this day in 1194, Richard I (the Lionheart) was crowned King of England for the second time, having previously surrendered his throne to Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI.

From England, Larry goes to the USA. He finds out that on this day in 2018, Barbara Bush, the wife of the 41st President of the United States and mother of the 43rd President, died at the age of 92 in Houston, Texas.

From the USA, Larry goes to Finland. He finds out that on this day in 2003, Anneli Jäätteenmäki was sworn in as Prime Minister of Finland, making it the second country (after New Zealand) to have a woman as both head of state and government.

From Finland, Larry goes to the world of space exploration. He finds out that on this day in 1970, The Apollo 13 command module, carrying James A. Lovell, Jr., Fred W. Haise, Jr., and John L. Swigert, Jr., entered Earth's atmosphere and splashed down, bringing an end to one of space history's most harrowing chapters; four days earlier, an oxygen tank ruptured, threatening the three men' lives.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from Sri Lanka. He finds out that on this day in 1917, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, a stateswoman who became the world's first female Prime Minister when her party won the 1960 general election in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), was born in Ratnapura, Ceylon [now Sri Lanka]. She left office in 1965, but returned to serve as prime minister for two more periods (1970-77 and 1994-2000).

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
