"The Fool 0 Tarot Card, Major Arcana"

I created this cut paper art and digitally colored it. This is the tarot card, Major Arcana called "THE FOOL 0 ." Usually, there is a man who is probably a traveler and a dog behind him on the Fool card. The dog tries to tell the man to not fail from the cliff. This card number is zero. People often recognize this man as a clown, green man or, joker. This man looks free and carefree.

On the other hand, there is a lady and a sitting dog on my Fool card. This lady is an Oiran which means courtesan in Japanese. Actually, an Oiran is the top member of courtesan culture. Oiran culture is not an easy thing to understand or accept by people but there were many Oiran ladies in Japanese culture in the past. Oiran ladies' lives were very tough. They couldn't escape from the special town and most of the ladies had to make money forever. There was no freedom but many ladies tried to survive their lives. That's why I wanted to make an Oiran Fool tarot card to create a symbol of freedom. Also, this dog is not trying to warn her. It chills near her leg on the edge of the cliff. I wanted to express no need to worry.

The cliff is connected to the Oiran's tobacco smoke. Actually, the smoke is becoming the cliff. This special Japanese smoking pipe is called Kiseru in Japanese. Oiran often smoke tobacco with this Kiseru pipe. I often imagine the smoke as a tentative but powerful existence. Additionally, the smoke has a powerful energy. I wanted to connect magical smoke to the cliff in the picture.

There are waves under the cliff. The waves look like Japan's cold ocean water. Again, my tarot cards' dog is sitting and chilling instead of stopping Oiran to not fall off the cliff. I think they'll never fall off the cliff. The cliff is actually floating in space.

I created small details like the fox mask in the Oiran's hand, a small bag hanging from the Kiseru pipe, beautiful hair accessories and jewelry on the Oiran's hair, a colorful Kimono dress, and a Kimono Obi band, and small Oiran's hands and nails. Yes, they were very small and hard to cut out. I designed them too tiny. However, after cutting the small parts, I often feel happy. I also enjoyed digital coloring on the cut paper art.

"愚者 零 番　タロットカード、大アルカナ”

切り絵を作りデジタルで色づけをしました。これはタロットカード大アルカナの「０番 愚者」のカードです。たいていは旅人の男とその後ろに描かれた犬の絵柄のカードです。後から男を追いかける犬は、男が崖から落ちるなと伝えようとしているように見えます。このカードの番号はゼロ・零（レイ）番です。宮廷のピエロ、グリーンマン、ジョーカーなどと解釈する人が多いようです。この男は自由でのん気な様子です。

一方、わたしの愚者のカードは女性と座っている犬の絵柄です。この女性は花魁です。花魁文化は人々から容易には理解されず、すんなりとは受け入れられない文化ではあると思いますが、日本の古い文化です。花魁の人生は過酷だったと思います。町から外に出ることは許されず、ほとんどの女性は一生稼ぎ続けなければならなかったのです。自由もなくほとんどの女性は生き残るために必死だったと思います。ですから、自由の象徴として花魁の愚者のカードを作りたかったのです。また、この犬は花魁に忠告などしていません。花魁の足元でくつろいでいます。心配ないというメッセージをそえたかったのです。

崖は花魁のタバコの煙につながっています。というか、煙が崖になっています。花魁は煙管（キセル）でタバコを吸っています。煙はいっときのものですが、力強い存在なので興味深いです。この不思議な煙をこの崖へと繋げたかったのです。

崖の下には日本の冷たい海と波があります。先に書いたように、わたしのタロットカードの犬は花魁が崖から落ちないようにと注意などはせず、まったりしています。彼らは崖から落ちたりはしないと思います。この崖は宇宙に浮いています。

花魁が手に持っている狐のお面、キセルにぶら下がっている小さなポーチ、美しい装飾品や髪飾りの数々、色鮮やかな着物と帯、花魁の小さな手と爪。とても小さくて切り絵しづらかったです。細かくデザインしすぎましたが、細かい部分を切り終えるといつも嬉しい気持ちになります。デジタルの色塗りも楽しかったです。

This path is known traditionally in cartomancy as the "Fool's Journey", and is frequently used to introduce the meaning of Major Arcana cards to beginners. According to A.E. Waite's 1910 book Pictorial Key to the Tarot, the Fool card is associated with:
Folly, mania, extravagance, intoxication, delirium, frenzy, bewrayment. [If the card is] Reversed: Negligence, absence, distribution, carelessness, apathy, nullity, vanity.

正位置の意味
自由、型にはまらない、無邪気、純粋、天真爛漫、可能性、発想力、天才。
逆位置の意味
軽率、わがまま、落ちこぼれ、ネガティブ、イライラ、焦り、意気消沈、注意欠陥多動性。
アーサー・エドワード・ウェイトのタロット図解における解説では「夢想・愚行・極端・熱狂」を意味するとされる。
